Sorry for the stupid question, but could someone show me a pic of crossover steering and explain what it is? Thanks.

The power steering box is on the driver's side. The pitman arm connects the power steering box to your drivers side front wheel hub. As the pitman arm moves forward or backwards it moves the driver's side front wheel left or right, the passenger tire is attached to the driver's side wheel by a connecting rod. There should also be a steering stabilizer shock to prevent some vibration.

Crossover steering is when the passenger wheel is connected to the steering box, a connecting rod is required as is a modified wheel hub, steering box, and this connecting rod is why it is called crossover. It enables you to articulate the suspension without affecting the steering control as bad. Flexing the suspension will always change the tires direction a little, but with factory Chevy steering you really loose alot of control and if the vehicle is lifted it is worse.

Look at the technical articles on the home page of CK5.

Oh, and there is no such thing as a stupid question. Just stupid people.:p:

By that, I mean you are amongst friends.:D

thats interesting I was never really clear on what it was, but $800 is alot of money for steering parts. I know alot of people have crossover steering I guess its that important

We've answered the what ... here's the why.

For a stock truck up to a small lift, the stock push-pull steering can work, especially for a road-only truck.

Crossover becomes necessary when you talk about bigger lift (more than, say, 4"), especially with different springs (i.e. longer than stock, or coil/linked), and/or if you go with hydraulically assisted (or full hydro) steering. At some point the stock push-pull arrangement just can't turn the wheels, especially when you're twisted up in the rocks with your front axle 45* off from the back :D

I have a 4" lift and EZride springs. I was hesitant to do this swap. It gets expensive when you start rebuilding everything. Most of the parts will swap over to a D60 if I ever go that route.

Ultimately, I'm glad I did it. Great mod.

Don't be hesitant you will not have any regrets. But you will if you don't, right now I have the stock set up and it sucks. I'm planing to do the swap when I put the 60 in this month. Go to Off Road Designs and check it out, there kit is 400 for the crossover and 800 for the high steer crossover but you do need to find a 2WD box. I'm going to pick one up at a junk yard for around 50 bucks. So if you just want cross over you be in it for under 500. If you don't make your own. If you do then its reel cheep but some time a pain. I'm only have a 4" lift with 35's
