I pulled the 8.1 apart and the driver side head has this one intake valve that looks different from all the others. The rest are nice even brown. Then the cooling passages have buildup on the edges. It feels somewhat metallic and oily. Both heads have a little bit of this around those large coolant passages.

This is in the coolant passages of the block, about an inch deep on the back two cylinders, and all of the coolant passages are oily. I thought something was weird when I pulled the water pump off and the water pump bolts were covered in black oil.

Maybe stop leak or similar?

I was thinking that or it might be because the oil cooler runs through the radiator. If it ruptured, it could’ve been leaking oil into those passages because it is a lot of oil.

Entirely possible! Any oil contamination?

I don’t remember reading that these 8.1 heads had a predisposition to cracking between the valve seats. I remember I checked mine out very well because, well, I have shit for luck.

I cleaned that one up and there’s not a visible crack there, it was a big chunk of carbon that came off. But I’ll take them to the Machine Shop and go through them to make sure they’re good. Same thing with the block once I get it torn down, I will have it magnafluxed and hot tanked at a minimum.
