So if you've seen my build thread you know i've been driving my blazer around my yard for about a day and a half. My 208 is making some strange "WHeEreEree" noises when shifted into 4wd. Sound is consistant with drivetrain speed so I think it may just be what it sounds like. BUT! If I shift into 4 LOW I can't "drive" in 2H or 4H unless I shut her down (OFF) and restart her. WEIRD! To give you a run down of events so you will understand:

1. I'm in 2H and stop
2. I place tranny in N
3. I place t'case in 4L
4. I place tranny in D (TH400) BTW
5. I drive around
6. I stop
7. I place tranny in N
8. I place t'case in 2H or 4H (doesn't matter)
9. I place tranny in D
10. Engine revs but goes nowhere.
11. I place tranny in R
12. Engine revs but goes nowhere.
13. I place tranny in park and I can hear my parking pin bouncing off of whatever it is suppose to engage when in park. (like throwing it into park while rolling)
14. I place tranny in N
15. I shut off engine
16. I place tranny in P
17. I restart engine
18. I place tranny in drive and drive away in 2H like nothing happened.

This has happened twice and I don't know enough about my 208 to know what this could be. And will my 208 always make that noise in 4wd?

BTW: I don't have a front driveshaft in yet!

TIA!

Your range fork is wearing out . Fix it now , or replace the whole case . It starts out like that , you wheel a few years , and then it only grabs 4 low making you drive really slow the rest of the way home .

Trust me , been there , done that , fixed it , and learned to shift from four low to 2wd while rolling too :thumb:

There is no adjustment in the case itself . The only thing you can do is adjust the length of the rod from case to shifter for floor variations or shifter relocation .

CRAP! Sucks I just got this thing together and now I gotta start looking for a replacement t'case! Oh well! Would a 241 fit right in if it had the same input on it?

Yes , a like spline case fits , but the only passenger drop years with mechanical speedo parts natively on it are late 1988-90 , by 91 it was electonic speedo , and you would need to find mechanical speedo parts for it .

I'd just put my GPS in it when I was going to drive on the "main roads" I don't think my speedo is very close anyways. (th400/np208/4.56/38.5 tire) I dunno!

Thanks for the help!

Could I have my 208 rebuilt at a tranny shop maybe? Is the repair something I could do myself?

Not hard a all, there is plenty of info out there and it is also covered in the haynes manuals. Only to watch for is when you open the case follow what the write ups say. I took mine apart backwards, not that big of a deal just made it more of a challenge. Look at this way if you mess it up then find a used case they are plentifull and cheap. BTW the biggest cause of failure is lack of fluid. It takes atf, get a pump from a marine supply for filling outdrives it will fit onto atf bottle makes filling easy.
Good Luck

Alright guys I am going to rebuild my tcase before to long now and I am wondering where I should get the kit from? I did a little googling and found a couple that seem decent but I don't see a "range fork" listed in any of them. If that is my problem then I would guess I need to get one of those as well. Where do I get the range fork? Should I order a 241 chain while I am at it?

EDIT: Would this range fork work?

Anybody?

I have another quick question about fluid coming from my tranny and over filling my tcase. Is this problem in the output shaft seal of my th400 or my input seal of my 208? Thanks!

Both if the transfercase is overfull after you top off your tranny .
