just curios if there are any advantages to a hawse over a roller

Hawse doesn't ball up when you rock hump it and sits more flush

Roller is easier on the cable

Roller came with the Smitty. But @mrk5 said he has a hawse for me. I ran that on the K5 with no issues

well i found a warn hawse fairlead for cheap so i bought it.it was a open box product

The thing that scares me about the rollers is ive seen one let go. Granted it was a sideways pull but it was like a bullet when it took off.

But rollers look bitchin.

And mine came with a roller, so . . .that's what got bolted on. lol.

They work great. I think people put junk bolts in and abuse them like that. The one I saw fly off was pulling a one ton 4 runner up a 30 degree bank sideways...a lot goin on there.

thats one thing i was going to do is get grade 8 hardware if it does not come with it

The higher the grade, the more brittle the bolt. They can't take a sheer force as well as a lower carbon bolt that bends. Look for one with the biggest bolt diameter.

Hawse, cause the roller stuck out far enough to hit everything on the old bumper. Had lots of abuse, which would lead to failure. Hawse is normally a rope thing but is ok if you run a steel hawse for cable. Aluminum might be too soft and chew up.

That's the problem I've seen with roller fairleads, they get beat to hell on rocks.
