What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

Thats about the extent of the question. Is jeep an acronym? A friend asked me and I figured you guys would know.

Thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

I think it comes from GP which is short for General Purpose from the world wars.
GP sounds like Jeep.

I call them Heeps though /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

That was the idea, abot the GP, but some think it came from some cartoon in the 40's about a "Jeep". It was a creature that could go anywhere and do anything. They think it's a combination of the two.

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

I thought the word Jeep was an Acronym ageed upon by those longer wheelbase 4x4's which lead large trains of crawlers through the mountains. They usually made the Jeeps follow up the back of the group since they needed to get pulled up the slopes and refered to them as ...

Just
Everone

Problem

this eventually gave way to the development of the winch so the JEEPS would stop asking for help all the time.

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

From a Jeep site I used to belong to...

One story has it that the lowly, uninformed GI's thought "GP" was for general purpose, and pronounced it "jeep". Other people say that the word "jeep" was slang for any wonderfully multipurpose thing. The Popeye cartoon had a character, named "Eugene the Jeep" in 1936, who had all kinds of amazing powers. Anyway, the source of the name "Jeep" is now vailed by the passage of time... but on with the story.

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

you mean hmmwv? (pronounced humvee) High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.

originally offered with a 6.2ltr and th400, later models had 6.5ltr TD and 4l60 i believe. trans has no park.

front and rear independant suspension, gear reduction hubs, fiberglass hood, disk brakes mounted at differential not hub. what else would you like to know? /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

What else? How about why are there so many more H2's on the road and not H1's?

If I'm gonna go in debt, I'm going all the way baby!

The commercials are mainly aimed at the H2 market. I haven't seen any REAL hummer ads. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Re: What is the origin of the word \"JEEP\"?

Yeah, the H2 is not a wheeling machine like is predacessor. It utilizes the suburban frame with the straight axle in the rear. The H1 uses all around independent suspension giving it awsome ground clearance. The H2 is aiming for luxory for the rich folk and not as much for wheeling. /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif
