what is this computer behind the glove box, is it to control the transmission, I'm looking for a good spot to put the ECM for the TPI /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif web page

That would be the ECM for your computer controlled carb and distributor.

is there a computer for the trans

No , not until much later (1990's) . The trans your year would have lockup and overdrive , but no computer . Even on tuned port Camaros there were no trans computers until the 1990's . /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

hmm, paul does my 86 have that? I have the carb on and it runs /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

It is the ESC (electronic spark control) box. If it is an 86 it might also control the carb.

It is not for the trans. It is for the distributor. It is there to retard your timing if the knock sensor senses a knock in the motor. Started sometime in the early 80's I believe. Maybe 81 with the new body design. My 85 had it.

My box is still in the truck ESC only for ignition , my distributor is in the garage, luckily my model had a factory non-computer carb motor , fuse box shows it , but they are blank . Truck came with only the spark system . /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Yes it is supposed to apparently in your model . Not all will have computer carbs , but all will have spark retard computers in our years /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Thats ESC AFAIK. Don't know of any 80's ECM that is that small.

I don't believe the ESC holder (that plastic piece) will work with an actual ECM, (even though the plastic looks physically large enough) but get that plastic piece from a TBI truck (people always leave those when they strip TBI off of trucks) and bolt it all in.

How can we tell if the carb is computer controlled? I'm just about to dive into an '85. I'm patial to ripping off the original carb but would prefer a truck that runs to one that suffers from "cummunication issues". /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Why did I ever sell that smog exempt government 1 Ton van? Grrr. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

As well as TPS on the drivers side. MC solenoid is on the passenger side top front of carb.

Don't confuse the dual capacity carbs with the CCC carbs. Dual capacity looks like it has the mixture control solenoid because it has wires there, but does not, and does not have TPS.

yea the ECM didn't fit in the plastic deal for the disributer, went to the junk yard today and found one from a TBI truck bolts right up. /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Only a California truck will have the dreaded CCC.

Hmm, on the subject of this post My 86 doesn't seem to have one of these boxes (I'll have to check) but the dist does have an extra plug that connects to nothing. I have no harness that will fit it under the hood. Can the dist run ok without that box or should I look for another dist?
