on the crapper...
I was just gonna hack these off, but I figured I'd ask if anybody knew what they were for first. They are just a couple of pieces of something like 1.5"x1/8" thick tube welded to the top of the axle tube. The start of some crazy coil spring mount or the start of some link brackets were the only things I could come up with. Somebody went to some trouble to weld them on real good.

No idea at all. My axle doesnt have them and its a factory unit in my K30.

I dont know man, it looks like a sore, you better go to the doctor and get that checked. :D :haha::haha:

maybe a cheap idea to keep from buying longer bump stops?

definately not factory though, never seen em before on any axle.

looks like a newer body style 14 bolt 88 and newer. Looks like a ghetto fabbed sway bar mount on a 2wd?

btw, that spindle looks hammered, is it just surface rust or was it missing brake parts for a while on that side?

this what i was thinkin

looks like they would line up with bumpstop...maybe so when loaded it wouldn't sag as bad...or remnants of an anti wrap system?:dunno:

The code on the R&P indicate a '78 axle. Yes, it is just surface rust *crosses fingers and knocks wood* and yes it was sitting for a while without brakes on that side. Whatever those "nubs" are I am pretty sure they are not factory. Maybe this axle was rolling around in the junk yard with another axle of ill repute and picked up something :haha:

those shock tabs are not 1978, who knows?

yeah the ones on my 78 axle were a lot longer, ripped one off on my first wheelin trip with it. but Im not sure if the axles were stock in that truck, I know the tranny and t-case werent.

Axle also came from a C20, which has different lower shock mounts than a same year K20 as I understand it. Those will get buzzed off too.

My W.A.G.:

Tabs for a coilover suspension/four-link set up.

That about where one would put the coilovers.

Thanks, I already checked that one out (saved it on my HD actually). It only shows the newer style and no PNs. :(

On a seperate note (look at me I'm hijacking my own thread!), has anybody pulled off a rear disc swap using the new drum-in-hat e-brake system from current axles?

is there a nice little round hole in each one parallel to the diff tube? could be a bulkhead block for the brake line to change over from hardline to steelbraid. too hard too see in the pics, its too small

After looking at it and crawling under my truck a few times, I am going with Big Dan on this one - I think it is an extension for the axle to hit the bump stops earlier. It seems to line right up with them. That and the fab work is a little sloppy for anything like link brackets (I hope!). It looks like one of them was cut to length with a torch. In any case they are lying on the floor of may garage in a pile of black dust along with the shock brackets now. Next comes a little shave....
