What is this? It goes between the case and the speedo cable. What purpose does it serve if I can by pass it and screw the cable straight to the t case?

Thats a speedometer cable adapter. Never done it, but what I have read if you screw cable directly to the case, the speedometer will be way off.

Ive been tempted to do it because mine leaks. Also read they are adjustable, and offered in different ratios.

That is a ratio adapter to correct cable turns for the speedo to read accurately after either a gear or tire size change from the factory gearing and tire size. That one is NOT able to be "adjusted". There are units that are capable of changing the 4 gears inside to recalibrate cable turns and those are identifiable by 4 screws or rivets holding the two halves together unlike the one pictured with only 3 rivets.

Thanks guys. Im going to leave it off as it is broken. This isnt the tcase that came in my truck so it probably wouldnt be right any ways, plus im running 40's. I guess ill keep my eye open for one that is adjustable.

You may not even need it if you were to find one of the speedo calculators online and figure out what drive and driven gear you have versus your tire size. There is a range of drive gears (the gear on the t-case output shaft) and a range of driven gears (gear on the piece that the speedo threads onto, called a driven gear housing) that will mate together. Once you come to a point that you cannot get a set of gears that mate then you need a different driven gear housing (this is what holds the driven gear that the speedo threads onto) once again if you get to where you can't get gears that mate THEN you need the ratio adapter. I do have a used one just like yours that i don't need IF you still need one. I would have to see what the ratio is (if it matches yours) but like i said your speedo probably isn't correct now anyways so just find one of the speedo calculators and see if you can correct the speedo by changing the driven gear (it is common to only change the driven gear).

Actually i just checked and i have one of the "adjustable" type. Send me a PM if you're intersted in it.

Here is a good link for some reading and to show what these adapter cost new. http://www.gaugeguys.com/speedcorrect.htm
