What is this thing?

I was removing the OEM interior panels last weekend in preparation for the Line-X and when I unscrewed the passenger side piece I noticed some wierd lookin smog-type related apparatus. There are 5 or 6 fuel lines all dumping into some strange looking triangular plastic collecting unit? I followed the lines down thru the bed and it looks like they travel forward along the frame and back into the fuel tank? What the %$#& is this thing and is there any reason for me not to tear it out?

I think it's probably some sort of military experiment! You better watch out if you go to tearing that out!

On the rear drivers side you should have a metal pipe looking thing that is connected to your tank....what year is your rig again?
Never seen a plastic thing you talk about?

My dad had an S-10 and that is exactly where his evaporative emmissions canister was.

Finally found the digital camera... the one shot in from beneath, all 5 of those lines go back into the tank. Since it's a smog exempt vehicle it will all be torn out but I was just curious as to what purpose it served.
