i have a 1980 k5 350 tbi 700r4 trans. i was adjusting the screw on the steering box, but there was a wire in the way that connects to a fitting on the frame with a little rubber boot. i took the wire off and seperated the fitting from the wire.....i put it back together the best i could, but i think i may need a new one. also, i tattempted to trace the wire without any luck. it either goes infront of the radiator and dissapears, or goes along side the drivers side engine compartment to the firewall. what is this wire for?

That wire is for your brake failure idiot light. It comes from the dash cluster to the proportioning valve which is located on the back of the first frame cross member. ;)

I'm pretty sure the wire you speak of is the brake light wire that is attached to the proportioning valve mounted on the front crossmember below the radiator. The switch attivates when there is a problem with pressure in the brake system which then turns on the brake light in the dash.

Also the adjusting screw on the steering box is a very critical adjustment and if you're not careful can prevent the steering box from turning beyond the center point and or break the cover or sector shaft. That adjustment needs to be done with an inch pound torque wrench on the input shaft to set the amount of resistance measured in inch pounds to turn the input shaft in a 20* arc on either side of center.

On a related note, does the proportioning valve require vacuum? I just swapped out my factory carb for an edelbrock and there was a large vac line running from the factory carb to what appeared to be the prop valve. Not sure which port on the new carb to tee it into...

*edit* I've been lurking on here for so long I didn't even realize this is my first post! So I guess a Hello Everybody is in order.

That large line supplys vacuum to the brake booster.

Prop valve is mechanical.

I got the brake booster line no problem. I'll have to go out and take some pics of the one I'm referring too.
