what is this

That is the knock sensor just in front of the starter. There should be a single blue wire that connects to it.

really so its 87+ because its in a 77 k5 with a th350 and a carb

also I knew you would answer so thanks

Carbed engines used a knock sensor as well, not sure when they started though. I know for a fact that on an 81 CAR they used a knock sensor and had the CCC carb.

Does the engine have centerbolt valve covers? I would get the numbers off the machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head and that will tell you what year it is.

no center bolt but the dipstick is on the passerger side. So no trucks came with knock sensors just cars?

Gm started the passenger side dipstick in 1980. Without centerbolt valve covers and a passenger side dipstick this engine should be 1980-1985 vintage.

Trucks did use a knock sensor with a carb but i don't know how early GM did that

If you get the number/letters off that passenger side machined pad in front of the cylinder head i can tell you what year and engine size.

There isn't one on my 80, but then again the engine isn't factory and the dipstick is on the driver's side.

autozone shows no knock sensor for anytruck but 87+ so its either a car motor or the PO Drilled and taped the heads for the old covers which could be possible seeing as my hole truck is one big hack job Im trying to fix.

big hack job the manual shifter hole was coverd with 20+ year old bear cans taped over the hole.

Driverside dipstick is 1979-earlier.
Yeah, I know, which probably explains why I had to mark my dipstick for full. Whenever I get the new engine built it will have it on the passenger side. My guess is the replacement was ordered based on the manufacture date which was 9/79. It's also why my Silverado had Cheyene badges on it, since it was right at the start of the new model year.

The heads cannot be tapped for perimeter bolt covers. Regardless there isn't an ECM in a 77 blazer anyhow so it is definately from a previous vehicle install.

your right its 81-86 305 no 350 had them so that means I have a pissy 305 no wonder my brothers k10 felt so much more peppy wait that could have been the manual and 4.10 axle ratio with 31" tires who knows

The only way the engine could be an 86 is if it has a 1 piece rear main seal as that is the first year for that.

4x4high what do you think the likely hood that my crank is drilled for a pilot bushing? since I have an sm465 to swap in soon and my trans is dieing
