I started to figure out the new wiring & using the old for a basic template. Anybody know what this square thingie is/was?

if i am correct its the external voltage regulator for the alt system.

but i dont have much experence with these.

Yes that is the voltage regulator for your alternator. If you have any questions feel free to ask, Ive done 3 wiring harnesses in these trucks and am about to jump into my 4th.

Sounds like you might be the guy to ask this question. I am just finishing a build, and have to admit, that the one place I did not spend money is the wiring harness. I still have the original and consequently inherited some issues. My issue is this. The battery is getting zapped. I have everthng working, other that the turn signals are slower when the headlights are on. I checked all the fusible links, and grounds, and dont have any blown fuses, but something is still killing the battery?

Actually I am just a novice to electrical and am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get this wiring done without too many glitches. Those old harnesses are wrapped up so much it could be quite tasking looking for a short/draw of power without using a ohm meter to check all those wires. You should ask in the garage with a new post. I'll bet somebody will at least give you a starting point or have a much better understanding of the electrical system.

Found it! The horn relay, which I understand is fairly common with these. It was stuck and draining power constantly.
