Can someone help?
What is the silver canister for that is attached to the air cleaner?
There is also a cap on the front of the grille to where the air cleaner hose connects.
I also have a metal mesh what looks like an air cleaner filter in addition to the filter.
Questions:
1. Can I remove the canister?
2. Can I remove the cap on the grille to force more air into the carb?
3. what does the metal mesh filter like thing do?
4. is this stock?

inside the tube it looks like there is a tornado or a circular metal piece that is used to create a vortex...
I would like to remove the metal and run a straight tube and remove the cap thing on the grill...Can I?

and i would just get an aftermarket air cleaner. removing the cap on the grille will just allow a bunch of stuff to enter ur intake,ur air filter will be the first and only defense against something getting in ur motor. or like a lot of people do, remove the intake tube completely. and some people like to take the top cover off the air filter and flip it upside down, then tighten it back down. it allows a little open space for air to enter like this http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1322/981/3302990022_large.jpg

I figured out what the metal mesh filter like thing is...
its part of the thermatic air cleaner..?

Just a guess, but it doesn't look stock to me. What year is your K5?

My first thought was that it was either an inline cone filter housing...

or one of those crazy Tornado vortex air swirler/gas saver things...

Curiosity would have me pulling the thing apart, but that's just me.

LOL, I did inspect everything..
Looks like there is a tornado installed, but all connections look stock.
Its an 85.

I removed the hose and engine seamed to run better.

It is stock, had one on my one-ton. Dont know what it does, but someone on here will chime in Im sure. I just changed to an after market air filter and housing.

Ahhh...is it a diesel?

Diesel engines don't have carbs. :deal:

From what I have heard that cannister is an air silincer.

I think thats a small block and not a 6.2. I can see what looks like plug wires, and that air cleaner looks just like the 80's smog ones.

They do have air filters and filter housings, though. Sometimes with air silencers attached, which is what I was getting at.

Regardless, it seems like that's what it is. I've yet to find any pics of a stocker with one in place - never seen one, either - but that seems to be the consensus.

No problem. I just figured that people actually read what was typed before responding or looked at the pic carefully. The pic alone shows spark plug wires and a vacuum brake booster of which diesels have neither. :D

Nope, my bad. I was distracted by looking at the big shiny thing, instead of the other bits in the pic.

Again, I have only seen silencers on diesels. Live and learn, eh?

Does it have a GM part number on it by any chance?

Its either a silencer, some kind of swirl chamber like the aftermarket tornado, or a mechanical prefilter like I have on my old tractor.

That fitting on the bottom you are holding it by doesn't have a removable chamber or flapper valve of some kind does it?

Last one:

Its a K46 : AIR CLEANER, HEAVY DUTY, PRE-CLEANER

It was part of the "off road package" and in some cases included an oil bath air cleaner.

I guess it was a new idea when it came out. Not a bad idea actually. If you are going to be operating in a dusty area, it will take out a huge amount of the dust and debris before they get to your filter.

That is why my 1949 8N Ford has one on it from the factory.......
