What is wrong with my Transmission?

I have had my Jimmy for about 4 years now and have always noticed that the transmission acted a little weird. I had a shop change the filter and fluid (no flush) and they said that everything was ok. Later after finding the TV cable was not hooked up and then reattaching it, the 1st to 2nd would be long and wound out, only shifting if you let off the throttle or you hit 35 mph. After 2 more years of no tranny problems, I was driving up an onramp and the 1st to 2nd shift felt like it was slipping so I let off the throttle, I thought that it shifted as it got quite, but when I hit the throttle at 30 mph it was in 1st. I got off the freeway and found a parking lot, there I tested to see what gears I had. I now only have P,R,N,and D but only in 1st and am unable to manually select 2nd or D3. I checked the fluid when I got home and it looked like used oil. Im taking it to a shop Monday to see what they say, but I would like y'alls input too.
P.S Its an 700R4. If I do need a new transmission what brand or rebuild kit should I use.

I'd be prepared for a total rebuild..unfortunately a 700R4 usually is roached after being run with the throttle valve cable not connected or not adjusted correctly..only takes a short distance to fry the clutches..

Greg Ducato is "the man" here when it comes to automatics--perhaps he'll have better news once he reads your symptoms..

I was ready for total failure 2 years ago after the TV wasn't attached, but 5,000 mile later it just surprised me.

You were probably lucky--sometimes they'll limp along OK for awhile after the tv cable is fixed, other times they don't..

I have a '85 K10 Suburban with a 700R4 & a 6.2,I bought it cheap due to the tranny supposedly losing reverse after 15 miles or so ,and it wont go in overdrive or stay in if it does, but it was being driven that way before I got it for some time..so far reverse works to move it around my yard, but I have never put it on the road, most likely it'd need to be rebuilt or replaced to be trusted..I'm not sure if the TV cable is hooked up or adjusted correctly--I'd guess it isn't--or wasn't,long enough to do some damage..

I was looking at Monster transmissions 700R4, its about 1,400. Im not happy to spend that much, but if it is going to be solid Im willing to pay. Is this the way to go or should I do a rebuild with a local shop? I am accepting a near total loss at this point.

I'm leery of any "mail order" transmissions...reading reviews online shows many complaints about "Monster" and other brands, and its a hassle if you do end up having issues with one to send it back, have your truck out of commission--I'd look for a reputable local tranny repair shop if it were me looking to have one rebuilt..then any issues that may arise can be dealt with easier..

But I'd be more likely to just get a "good used" salvage yard one with a warranty,or one from a running driveable rotted out truck off craigslist or facebook marketplace, the price would be much less..

I do not drive very far and could get by with a used one--if your commuting to work daily or use the truck for a business, long distances ,then a rebuilt one makes more sense..

I think some members here have had Greg Ducato build transmissions for them..

greg ships trans out also . there is a lot of members here with his units in service .

he has even helped me on some parts and mods with great service and results .

That might not be an option as my truck is my only mode of transportation so I am looking at as little down time as possible, fortunately money is not a big issue right now so I can pay what I have to for a quality replacement/ rebuild. I have no doubt that he does great work, but id have to get a transmission fast.

^ Me too,Greg helped me out with the TH400 in my diesel pickup ,sent me a modified govenor and a spring for the modulator valve to make it upshift sooner, when the vacuum pump croaked in it..
If he wasn't 2500 miles away I'd have him do my transmission rebuilds (if I had money that is!)..

I have read some horror stories about Monster transmission's mail order transmissions. If the trans has a problem, Monster will not do anything for you to fix the problem. Even after they admit the problem was their fault. It is OK to buy their high performance parts, and build your own trans, but you do not want to buy a complete trans from them.

The problem with Monster Transmission's is that they have about 20 order takers that do not know anything about transmissions, and only one or two trans builders that do know anything about transmissions. If you have a problem with one of their transmissions, you will have to run the gauntlet of 20 order takers (that think they know what they are talking about) to get to one trans builder that does know what they are talking about.

I am in Syracuse with the truck. The problem is that I would need to get it towed all the way down to there and then find a way to get back and then back down when he is finished with it. I would do a lot more of the work myself, but the problem is that I don't have the space or time right now as I am a student at the university.

well i got a full shop here 20min south of his trans shop . i could pull it and install it . i got a lift / trans jack / tools galor .

i could ask my old boss how much for a tow down . he might even just let me barrow the rollback car trailer .

How long do you'd think it will take to do the whole operation? This sounds like a very viable option.

depends on what you want done .

reman yours ? depends on time frame at his shop and parts needed .

just swap a trans with a remaned unit not to bad at all .
