Works in a mid 80s k5? Factory one is a little wide with my seats so looking for something a little narrower. I read something about explorers having a console that fits nice ?

Don't the later model tahoe's, suburban's have a narrower center console? They may be longer though....
How bout a measurement between seats?

I was browsing JCWhitney the other day and they have several consoles which look good and would fit, not as cheap as the junkyard but not too bad.

I know you said junkyard, but in the aftermarket world, Smittybilt and Tuffy both make consoles aimed at Jeeps. I ended up getting one of these on CL in new condition for less than new price and it was skinny enough to fit with my cage and seats.
It's metal, has a nice padded top, adjustable cupholders, blah blah blah.
Anyway, it all depends on your individual instance, so maybe take a measuring tape (and a bunch of pictures with your phone) on your next junkyard run. This is what I do when I donno exactly what I need.

Really, i like the stock one. Its roomy, has good cupholders, and matches.
If you get a 92-94 blazer/truck/burb one, or a 89-94 truck one, its a bit narrower, still has decent cupholders, and has a lockable lid.
The locking mechanisms went plastic after that. And the 95-99 console sucked donkey balls. Narrow, no capacity, only 1.5 cupholders with the right adapter, etc.

Yea I like the look of the 90's chevy console to. I would like to use the factory one and I still might just because its the original one that was in my 83 blazer I got when I was 16. in spirit its the same truck just had body,frame and title changed a few times but still has same key on same key ring. Its basically the only thing left from it other then steering column and some nuts and bolts. 
but i think its going. To rub a hole in my seats if I open it to much. I'm on craigslist everday twice a day. But I live in a small town not a lot of cool stuff pops up to often and usually its gone by I get of work.I'll get some pics up to show what I'm dealing with.

I have a tuffy console that think is metal, locks, and is cavernous.
