well, i have an a/c truck, but don't run a/c. everything is gone, including the box. all i have left is the fan. i wanted to run a non-a/c fan box, but found that the firewalls are different, so i'm going to have to make a custom fan box. what type of fiberglass should i use and where can i get it?

==============

edit. sorry i'm asking this in such a confusing way. i think that posts 13 and 14 in this thread clear up my thinking some.

All you need is to cut a sheetmetal plate and silicone/bolt it in place.

Of course the internal stuff I believe needs changed, but it's been awhile...

Just seems a lot easier than fiberglassing a new box.

you can make a simple plate that covers the extra open area thats what i have done in the pass

that would be to delete the climate stuff - that's not what i want to do. sorry, i didn't make myself clear in the first post.

i still need the fan to work, because i need to heat the truck and keep the windows defrosted. so, i need to build a custom box that delivers the air from the fan to the opening in the firewall where the heater core is.

If you need the interior box with a heater core that will work for the center heat opening and defrost (no dash vents) I have one :D . Let me know.

Also I would hit up Ryoken on what to use, he seems to know his glass well.

that's what i meant, I have a AC truck but am running a non ac heater box

heres a pic of what im talking about
hmmmm. i'm a bit confused by that picture. did you cut a new hole into your firewall, and simply cover the other one?

now i gotta get off my ass and go look at my firewall.

not sure if i need that. might be easier to fabricate my own thing out of fiber glass than it would be to cut a new hole and install the thing you've got. ofcourse, i'm fairly certain i have no clue as to what i'm talking about - so maybe i do? :D

yeah, i'm gonna need you to elaborate. :wink1:

did you take the heater core out, replace it with a non-a/c heater core so that the intake/return nipples were in a different location and then cut yourself a new hole? that seems like a lot more work than if i fiberglassed something together... ofcourse, i've never done that either. now seems like a good time to learn.

just perused thru, hearing fiberglass, why not just get a heat only box?

as for glass, not for the faint of heart, but if your serious, let me know...

be aware that bonding to a factory heatbox isn't as cut/dry as you might think....,

Colby, I'm trying to understand exactly what you are doing. How come if you take all your a/c stuff off the truck you still can't use your heater or are all your heater/ a/c stuff removed and you just want to put back the heat.

Side note: Since I took all my a/c crap out of the engine compartment I can still use my heater right?

Yes you can still use the heater as long as you have the heater core and blower hooked up. If you just removed the A/C lines and stuff you will still be able to use the heat. I think he just wants less crap in the way. The non AC boxes are smaller and take up much less room.

ryoken:

i can't run a heat only box because the firewalls are different. i don't necesarily need to bond to existing glass, because all i'd need to do would be build a hole new thing and mount the fan to the new one (the remove w/ a matter of a few bolts).

lak2004:

i would like to run the mojave heater - 2 of them actually, directly under both front seats, but money prevents it at the moment and i need to do something before the 19th - as i'm going snow camping and i gotta keep the lady happy!

I guess i could install your old equipment, but it still seems harder than fabbing something up myself. at the worst, i could make it all out of sheet metal and angle iron and it'd be a simple day's work, and i have all the metal for it already. just thought fiberglass would be fairly easy and light weight.

lak2004 is on the right track as to what i'm thinking. i want to have a big open engine bay - not full of unused a/c box stuff.

take a gander at post #8. you can see my current firewall (the green one, crappy phone pic), from left to right, has a hole in it for the fan, then the heater core nipples, then the hole where air is directed through so as to get into the cab of the truck. this is your typical a/c firewall.

look at pic #5 in post number 10, you'll see that his firewall holes, left to right, are for the fan, then the entry into the cab, then the nipples for the heater core. so, it's not as simple as taking a fan box off of a non-a/c truck and sticking it onto mine.
