What kind of oil for a Diesel?

im running the Chevron Delo 400 SAE 15w-40 in my 6.5L non turbo :( .. seems good. like $8 for a gallon (the big blue jugs at wal mart) with a fram oil filter and air cleaner.
sorry to hi-jack a bit, but how often do u diesel guys change ur oil?

Original spec probably SG/CD. S for spark, gas engine. C for combustion, diesel. For diesels buy oil that has the C specification first, then the S spec. That means it was designed first for diesel, then its also approved for gas engine.

For the 6.2 Diesel:
Above 32F(0C), 30
Above 0F(-18C), 15W-40 (preferred)
Below 60F (16C), 10W-30
(SAE 30 preferred above 32F)

CH-4 spec, 15W-40 would be a good choice. Chevron Delo 400, or Shell Rotella T

If you want to do oil analysis, try Stavely Services (CTC Analytical in Reno Nevada). However, determine what you are using the analysis for. One sample can give catastrophic results, consistent samples can establish a trend in the engine so you can see when something changes.

Diesel oils have a more robust additive package, and are high detergent to keep the engine cleaner (and they do perform better in gas engines, just use the correct viscosity). :D
