I just acquired this truck yesterday. I got it for the sm465 and axles. But these front hubs are on them, I had never seen this style before does anyone run with these? Or had experience are they any good? Thanks.

That's external locking hubs. IIRC pre 76'. I have a set on a 10 bolt I just made to 8 lug that came from a 74' dana 44. I haven't had the chance to actually use them yet since I don't have a front driveshaft yet thanks to the high lift and GM's wonderful exhaust routing. But they seem to have mixed reviews being a bolt on hub instead of an internal.

there are a couple downsides to having that style hub. i have external milemarkers on my dana 44, and the bolts seem to like to come loose. i was checking things over one day and on one side, 4 of the 6 bolts were loose, and on the other side, 4 were loose, and 2 were downright gone. if i hadn't used grade 8's they would have surely been snapped.

another downside, which isn't a problem for most people, is that the hubs stick out farther than the internal style and can get whacked on rocks and stuff. hasn't happened so far and i've had my truck rock bouncing a couple times.

Selctros get crap in them, loosen up, are hard to turn, seem to freeze solid.

They are ancient also.

Not the best, but if they work they work.

I don't even think you can get replacements for em except for maybe some resto places

I had just never seen that style before, the guy I got the the truck from said he put them on back in '89. Just curious about them

I have seen something like that on an axle that I was thinking about buying the guy said that it was a Dana 60 but I'm not sure what the axle really is. I would like to find out what axle it is before I get it

To the best of my knowledge D60 never had external locking hubs.

Some D44 had what I call a "big hub" version that looked a lot like a D60 hub but was really a D44 external hub design.

Dodges had external locking hubs on their 60s, but this one looks like a big hub 44

Ditto, Dodge version D60's had external locking hubs like this until the last few years of them using the kingpin style axles.

As mentioned above these external style hubs are typically considered the be less desireable than the internal style. This is mainly because you are relying on the bolts to hold the hub on and transfer all of the torque between the axleshafts and tires.

I got a picture I could post but I need a few more post to be able to. Maybe someone could know what it is.

75'-76' Ford low pinion d60s had those too.

Also if you junk the bolts, install studs and lock washers, they won't come loose anymore. I had to do that to my dodge.

Here is a pic of the dodge (i call them big BIG hub) dana 60's with external locking hub,

And one last one just for fun.

Some one here posted an ad that showed them as a winch option.

Yup dodge D60's had them...

I ran selectro hubs with a blown big block and never broke one...:dunno:

I suggest cleaning all the thread in the hub with a bottom tap, and then red Locktite grade 8 studs into the hub.

Install the selecto hub with grade 8 washers and locking nuts and torque everything a few time after running a trail or two..
