If you have engine assembly lube, use it. I have also built motors with just oil all over the bearings too, and they were fine. Just be sure to prime the oil pump before putting the distributor in to start it.

It all depends on how soon the engine will be started after it's assembled. If you're building it and it's going to be started right away then regular old oil is fine, but if it's going to sit for any length of time then you want an assembly lube (I use Michigan Bearing Lube). The bearing lube will stay in place forever unlike regular oil which will drain away from the crank/bearings within several days.

Good enough! Thanks dudes! It will only sit a couple days before firing. Any specific weight better then others? 10-30? 10-40? 30?

engine assembly lube and STP on rods...mains...10w 40 oil on cylinder walls/rings..

mfg cam lube if included w/cam.

Are you going to pre lube it with the pump and a drill? Even a couple of days is too long. Use a good assembly lube! It's not worth the effort to build an engine and then take short cuts.

assy lube, and stp mix on the bearings (short term) and dexron II on the cylinder walls.
