I am going to pick up a sand blaster from Harbor Freight unless someone tells me otherwise and want to know which media would be best for blasting the crap off the axles, possibly transmissions like SM465?

I was just planning on getting the 100lbs single tank, thoughts?

Pressure feed blasters are the only ones worth buying in my opinion...

We used "Black Beauty" at the junkyard to blast old rusted parts,it's too rough for sheet metal though,it can warp it easily if your not real careful..

There are lots of other abrasives ,like glass beads, crushed walnut shells, aluminum oxide, and now baking soda has become a popular alternative to sand or other mineral based abrasives..

We also used sand we shoveled off the side of the road and sifted good through a window screen, and dried it on a wood stove in a bucket..it worked well, though sometimes pebbles that got thru would clog up the feed in the blaster once in a while..
We also used "play sand" bought at places like Lowes, but if you use any sand,be sure you wear a GOOD respirator, because silicosis is a nasty disease and its not hard to get it if you dont..

I can get black beauty local for the axles, and for the underside of the truck, walnut or oxide?

don't overthink it..

you'll need WAY more aggressiveness for the underside than walnut, plasti beads, soda, etc.... I run white sand for all my metal work, axles, frames, etc... it's clean, no sifting, not much more $$$ than play sand and leaves a nice grit for primer...... we used to use nasty 00 sand out of the 1000 lb'er for blasting mixers back in the day...

pressurized 40 lb HF is what I run.. just eats tips up pretty quick, buy the 10 replacement pack...

I get it from my local Ace hardware.. it's about $5 a bag.... they have lot's of sands, that's one I picked out years ago for my blasting needs.. VERY consistent grains.. as opposed to typical playsand..

Check locally for a sandblasting equipment company. I buy white blasting sand by the pallet from a company called Sandmasters .....sifted, cleaned, and dried.......ready to use.

I'm not sure if this 'white sand' you guys are talking about is silica sand, but if it is, I would not use it. The dust from silica sand is very bad to breathe. It can flat kill you. Plus it can leave trace amounts of silica imbedded in the metal that can cause issues with some epoxy primers. If you must use it be sure to use a good respirator. What we use in this area is Kleen Blast brand. It is a copper slag.

With the HF blaster you will want to use a 70 grit. The 30/60 grit will plug up the nozzle unless you have a worn out nozzle. Then your air consumption goes up too.

For some reason I'm not seeing it on their website.......don't know why. When I google kleen blast copper slag, that website is at the top. Two of my neighbors buy it a pallet at a time and have been for many years.

Which product are you using from Kleenblast?

What kind of valve can you run that doesn't get eaten up by the sand? All I can find are teflon lined ones and before long you can't actually shut the thing off anymore.

I just unhook my air.....??......? :dunno:  ;)

the end nozzle valve hasn't worked on mine in forever... :haha: but I'm too lazy to buy a new decent one...

I'm sure TP tools has nice ones.... http://www.tptools.com/

Not sure it is convenient being 5-1/2 hours away but I like to drive.:dunno:

Truth is I do a lot of work in Pittsburgh so it becomes a 2 hour out of the way loop while working down there.

Coal slag.

Sand is outdated, once you run this you won't go back. I know 4 professional sand blasters (all own there own business - sandblasting is kind of a big deal where I am from) and it's all they use. Less heat warpage. Less abrasive on rubber and other components, still cuts well, healthy to breath.

I bought some of the above and used in my pressure pot with good success. I like it.
