What psi should our oil pressure be?

Ive been a mechanic for almost ever and the old standy was always 10 psi for every 1000 rpm....

I read somewhere, an engine should be able to live with 10 psi for every 1000 rpm on the tach. That seems a little low to me though.

40-50 psi at idle and up to as much as 80 at wot on a new engine at operating temperature has been my experience.

My newly rebuilt stock 350 runs about 25 psi at idle (750 rpm) after it's warmed up. It goes well over 50psi as engine rpm's increase.

IMO, the 10 psi per 1000 RPM thing is really only for the drag strip and high horsepower stuff.

At idle, you only need a few pounds of oil pressure to keep the motor from knocking.

My 84 K5 runs just over 30 PSI down the freeway after warmed up with 15/40 Dino oil and isnt much lower at idle. I used to question the O/P gauge in our 83 C2500 hay wagon and now think the 25 PSI at speed is correct. Both are tired with 150K+ miles but keep chugging along. My 07 2500 6.0 only runs around 45 at speed.

most engins run 15-25 psi at idle when warmed up.then around 80 or more at high rpm.usually pressure goes up by 10 psi per 1000 rpm higher the engine revs from your baseline idle rpm.

Mine stays right around 30 after it is warm. I might dip to 25 at idle but running down the road is around 30-40. When it is cold it is up at the top of the gauge around 60. This is on a bone stock 350 that has never been reworked. It has just under 180,000 on the odometer.

I was just in a Chiltons book the other day and IIRC it said 20psi @ 1700rpm
