What should I do for a motor?? ~PCV fixed, now what?~

the only thing about building your own is you really have to build it twice to be certain its right you have to put it together with clay on your piston roll it over take the head back off cut the clay in half measure your piston to valve clearance, you have to hand file your rings to get the right end gap....you have to use the clearane type clay on ur rods and mains then take them back off and put the package up against it to see how wide it squished down to see ur clearance there and i wouldn't put one together ever again without having the rotating mass ballanced... i would probally drop 1 of those motors from

off at the machine shop and have it aligne honed, decked and balanced, prolly some forged pistons, and a little bigger cam also...

thinking seriousley about ordering the '96 roller 454 they have. i can't believe their prices, if any1 knows of a cheaper place by all means post it up
 
by the way when did they go to roller cams in the big blocks? all i have are older regular hydralic cams...would the $1800 427 be a roller motor? i guess i'll just call them...i mean 7 yr warranty, has to be a catch
 
yeah, the catch is, they're in WA. and you're in Arkansas, if anything goes wrong with it, they'll likely have you crate it up and send it to them. the warranty is probably full of loopholes too. the Bowtie Overdrives warranty i have heard is full of loopholes so that they can get out of warranty claims.

if you're going for a plug and play deal, go to your local rebuilder/machine shop, or your local GM dealer. that way if you do have warranty issues, the place to take it to is local.
 
i've emailed them and asked for a price on a short block,well if i'm going to go with a larger roler cam and aluminum intake and pistons that will handle a 125 hp shot, it would probally void their warranty any way...
i would prolly still have the machine shop give it the once over even tho its new, have it align honed and make sure my bores are square with the crank, balance the rotating mass then prolly some type of matched top end with aluminum heads, cam, carb, and a plate nos system, the main reason for ordering from them is to get the roller bb... its cheap as just a block alone
then i can put their low buck stuff in one of my other motors to have just a basicly stock motor for something else, like the 85 sunbird that i have for the strip that just puked it guts up...it was a stock 496 marine engine.
 
Has anyone here actually gotten a new motor from the dealership??

Also, I was talking to a local member who knows a professional engine builder, and he says to rebuild my motor would be like $1700+, and i wouldn`t be able to use pump gas anymore, would have to go to 93 octane. Now thats because of certain components used I`m assuming, but what?
 
I installed the 10067353 GM crate. Bought from Jeg's. I've noticed they're charging for shipping now, but its still a good deal at <$1500. I had my own "personalized" edelbrock intake, bought Edelbrock "EGR" heads and a Comp Cam. Its a sweet motor.:D

In the coming months I'm going to have all sorts of "extra" engines that I'll be looking to get rid of:

350SBC - The solid runner from the '72 Burb, fresh valve job, aluminum intake and HEI dizzy.
396BBC - The motor currently sitting in the '72 K5. Completely rebuilt but still has a lifter tick from time to time. Aluminum intake, MSD ProBillet dizzy, Thorley headers.
396BBC - The motor from the C60 Moving van. Runs like a jewel, so I pulled it before junking the truck. Complete with all accessories, iron intake (2BBL) and HEI dizzy.
454BBC - In pieces. This one is a project. Hydrolocked marine motor...Block will need machining, needs rods/pistons (crank can probably be re-used), heads are already freshened up.

It happens so slowly.....then next thing you know, I've got a garage full of "stuff"!!!! :haha:

Have you had any warranty problems yet?
 
I put that same universal 350 in a station wagon for my bro in law. He is going to college about 6hrs away and needed something reliable for the drive back and forth. At Thanksgiving he had about 25K on the engine with no problems. other than the drive home for holidays, I know he has made a couple trips from Okie City to Seattle and gone from OKC to South Padre. I think it has been a great bang for the buck engine. If nothing else put it in and add to it as time/budget allow. Add heads, cam, intake etc and you could always bore/stroke it down the line.
 
If it were up to any of you, what would you do....

find a good running one, get it rebuilt locally, or buy a crate from Jegs/Chevy Dealership, etc.....
 
Another option could be to go to your local machine shop and get yourself a good 4 bolt main short block and add to it as you come up with the money. I had a motor built and wasnt happy with it so I ended up taking it back down and replacing the top end. That would be the easier build it yourself way if you wanted to learn. Really the better way would be to just buy a crate engine, which I think is what I should have done in the first place. I would have saved money from what I ended up doing. Depending on what kind of power you are looking for, Edelbrock has some nice engines but they are kinda pricey, and GM Performance parts has some good ones too in varying hp models.
 
Well, I`m looking for something that has more power over stock, but not so much that i have to get a new chip burnt up. It has to be an 87+ motor so I can use my tbi stuff on it, and still be able to run on pump gas. Any recomendations??

I'm in pretty much the same quandry. I've done the math and the homework, and the crate motor from the gm dealer is, in my opinion, the best deal going!

If you rebuild the motor, once you get the rebuild kit, get all the machine work done, and replace any components (especially considering you want a bit of a performer), you are w/in a couple of bucks from the crate! You may be able to save some money and go to the boneyard and pick up a used motor. Fast forward one year, crap, should i rebuild, or buy a crate motor!?!? You can't beat having a warranty of 50k on a motor you are putting in a toy!!!
