Quick question. I need new spring center pins for the rear of my 79 GMC.
Does anybody remember what size they are?

Thanks. That sounds right. I couldnt remember and wanted to pick up a pair before taking the truck apart.

You can use 3/8" fine thread grade 8 bolts of the correct length, and just round the heads off. I put the shaft into a drill, then run them up against the bench grinder -- the poor man's lathe :haha:

3/8 cap screws (allen type bolts) fit nicely also and do not require grinding. They are also easy to get tightened with out vicegrips:D.

I always heard it is not good to use a grade 8 bolt. A grade 8 bolt will snap instead of bending. I have pulled out many tie bolts that were all bent up where a grade 8 bolt would of just broke instead of bend.

Wrong. Where a lesser grade will deform the grade 8 will still look new. If you get to the point where you are bending grade 8 a grade 5 or less would have long ago failed.

The increased grade increases the overall strength of the fastener it does not just change the ductility or hardness of the fastener.

2x I use the same. According to Fastenal they are Grade 8.
