Mostly depends on how much you want to cut, and how much you want to actually wheel it, and how much you want to mall crawl it. I fit that size tire with a 4 inch lift and lots of chopping. Many people go with a 6 inch, and it still rubs at full compression.

Your mileage may vary. :)

a buddy of mine with a 10" rubbed 39.5s he likes his sheet metal though, stepped up to 12

i have 8inch superlift and 3inch body with cut out flares and 38.5s fit real good with lots of clearance

I think if you want your truck to be very capable off road you should have NO more then 6 in lift. You would still have to cut sheet metal But I have no issue with that. Are you willing to cut? If not, as was allready stated are going to have to run a big lift. For a K5 you will have crappy drive train angles. 6 in lift has bad enough angle to it but it's doable.

I'm running 38's with 4 in suspension and a 1 in body. I would say thats max for a body. Guys running 3 in body lifts get crackes around the body bushings over time. What are your goal for the truck, Rock crawling, Mall crawler, good light trail blazing? you have to decide what you want to do with it before you go to town on it.

x2 on what everyone else said as far as lift goes, as far as legality you will have to check what VA laws say, i know in MD once it's 20 years old you can tag historic and no inspection is required so unless you are running a crazy lift/tire combo you can get away with it. in the "what will my truck look like with xx lift xx tires" thread there are lots of guys running 40's, check it out ! check pg 6, another VA guy running 39" iroks with a little trimming.

I would do an 8 inch lift and do a little trimming, maybe install some Bushwhacker fender flares to compensate for the sheet metal that's not there any more. If you do go with a lift, get one with springs all the way around, no lift blocks.
