15?16?17?

Is it worth keeping 15 inch rims or should I upsize? I will have to buy new tires to get my truck sturdy anyway...I have some 8 lug 15's but my tires are junk.

Info and a pic link in my sig...

OK, so you are planning on 3/4 ton stuff? Go with 16s or 17s. Bigger brakes without grinding, plenty of tire sizes and choices, shorter sidewalls can provide better lateral stability when aired down. That's some pretty good reasons right there.

I went with 17s simply because I wanted H2 wheels. I couldn't find any cheap yet decent H2s and almost pulled the trigger on some new 17" steel wheels from Summit when a set popped up on my local c-list. The 17" tire choices are a bit more pricey than the 16s though. But the 17" choices are becoming more and more widely available, even more so than the 16s.

16's.

I had a bald set of 31's on the stock 15x8 Rallys that BADLY needed a refinish due to the decades of caked on brake dust.

I like a higher load rating than C and that's rare in 15" tires. Decided to go with 16's so I could take advantage of all the common 16" sizes that would easily fit under our trucks and yet also had D and E load ratings. First I purchased a set of 265/75R16 Load Range E tires and now I have 305/70R16 Load Range D tires.

If I was going bigger than 33's I might just consider 17's as that is the new up and coming size and just about everything new in the world of tires has sizes to fit it.

16" and 16.5". My next ones will be 17" Racelines! These. http://offroad-review.com/new/index.php?page=374

I have 15s on one and 16.5s on the other. Both of which seem to be losing popularity. I planned on changing to something more popular, at least on my dd but I keep finding good deals on used tires.

I would like to be running 17s, they seem to be what's "in" right now anyways

15's and 42's :D Only downside is having to grind the calipers.

17" and 37" rubber, had the wheels lying around and found a good deal on some 37" BFG's on Craigslist, plus I like the higher load rating for everyday driving. Additionally there seemed to be more variety of larger tires in 17" than 15" when I was looking.

I was thinking 16 inch rims maybe with Goodyear 285/75 Duratrac's using take off rims or steelies.

I run 16x12's. Keeps me from having to worry about any clearance issues with my one tons and has a better bead sealing area than the 16.5's.

16.5 recentered H1's and 36" goodyear humvee tires on one and 16" GM HD factory aluminum with 285 BFG AT's on the other, third has 16x7 American racing rims with 38" Michelin XL's I made these choices because I had them would probably just go with 17's on all if I was starting over.

17's on my 2001 silverado DD
18/19 on the Camaro
15's on the burb.

Best friend runs a tire store and he said that he doesn't even stock a 15" mud grip any more. All 16's, 17's, and 20's. The 15's are still available to him next day delivery still, though.

Trying to find a cheap set of H2s for my upcoming 3/4 axle swap.

15's on my Blazer, 16.5's on the tow rig.

I would trade the 15's on my Blazer (trail rig) for anything else, they take a lot of grinding to fit a D60 front, I've had 15x8's w/2.75" backspacing and 15x10's w/3.5" backspacing. They always rub, you'll get to a point that they won't rub in the garage and then go wheel them for a while and the combination of pad wear, rocks/sand/mud etc all tear up the caliper and wheel. You'll eventually destroy the wheel and possibly caliper, either of which could be a really bad failure. Salt on the roads makes that exposed steel that much worse.

15's really don't work well on an 8 lug front end. I, like most, got into it because I ran into a great deal on some brand new 37" MT/R's years back for a 15" wheel so I simply grabbed some 8 lug 15" wheels to match. Later, I found a good deal on a set of used 42" IROKs for a 15" wheel and switched. Then I replaced those wheels with beadlocks. Now I'm stuck with tires and wheels that are ok but could be better and it's big $$$ to change everything now. If I had gone to 16" or 17" wheels earlier I wouldn't want anything to change now.

I run 37x12.50R16.5's on the tow rig primarily to keep RPM's down for the diesel, plus the tires are super cheap! That wheel size is bad for four wheeling unless you run double beadlocks and even then the H1's typically need to be recentered and need a rock ring which throws their "cheap" price right out the window.

To sum up my opinion for a wheeling rig, 16's and 17's are good, avoid 15's and 16.5's!
