What size tubing do I use?

I'm gong to build a cage but am not sure what size tubing to use. I've got about 80 ft. of 2"x 1/8" wall. Some guys have said to use 1 3/4". I know the 2" will be much stronger, but no one in town seems to be set up to bend it.

Or HREW for those of us that don't race NASCAR...:D

I used 1.75" x .120" wall HREW for mine.

If you intend to keep the hard top I would take a good look at 1 1/2" DOM. The smaller size will allow it to be tucked up a bit higher and as long as you have a hard top over the front seats 1 1/2" will be strong enough.

I built my buggy from 1 3/4" and the next one I do will be out of 1 1/2".

Just a thought. If you keep the hard cab.

We used .175 .120 wall HREW on mine and I'm still using the hard top.

Wow that is supersaturated tube there. The OD is .175 and the combined wall thickness is .240:eek1: . Is it also made from unobtainium?:haha:

Im sure I'll get called out on this, but it's my understanding they are basically the same but the DOM has had the inside seam cut down for use in such things as Hyd cylinders and HREW still has the seam.

No,just explain your response in laymens terms.Specifially "super saturated" and how it's 240 wall.

OK Super Saturated means that you have physically put more of something into another thing than should naturally be possible. In this case you put more "tubing" in a given air space than is physically possible.

Super Saturated is generally used with liquids. For example you can disolve a given amount of sugar in water at room temperature. Now if you heat the water up the spaces between the water molecules get bigger and allow more sugar to be disolved between the water molecules. That solution has now become Super Saturated or over saturated.

You said you used .175 X .120 wall. That means the OD of the tubing is .175" in diameter. If you add the wall thickness together, .120+.120, you get .240. Therefore your total wall thickness is thicker than the overall diameter of your tubing and makes it physically impossible to actually exist.

I was making a joke about your typo and I am sorry you got butt hurt and did not see the humor. I am sure others on here did.

HREW and DOM are made the same way for the first step. It starts as a flat sheet and gets rolled into a tube and welded by electronic resistance. If you have seen "How It's Made" it is the type of welding the used to weld the individual links of chain together. Kinda like heating both sides and pressing them together until the fuse.

HREW basically stops there while DOM is taken through a second process where the tubing is Drawn Over a Mandrel hence the name. This process smooths the weld out and makes the ID more uniform than its HREW counterpart.

This is the way I understand it if I am wrong I will never admit it:D

Not butt hurt in the slightest, and I know/knew the literal meaning supersaturated but just not how it applied here.I might have put more in the back than what was needed but I have an 8yo that will be riding back there. If I get out and get myself hurt that's my ass,but getting him hurt is something else.As far as the overhead in the cab I plan to mount a Cb overhead.I still have to get the seats mounted,5 points and my sliders.Im sure it's not as high tech as some but for $800 I think he's doing a good job.

Yep when I build my cage it will be overkill as my daughter rides with me. I dont carry more than the 2 of us much but I will have 2 buckets in the back also but everything will be with 5 point harnesses. It might be a pain to get in and out back there but it will be safe.:D

I am thinking about starting with an S&W cage as a base and then build off of it from there to get what I want. I really like Steve's old cage in the UAV before it went truggy.
