What tire pressure do you run while wheelin\'?

I have been dropping my psi by 2 each time lately and have gone down to 15 psi at the lowest. I run 35 12.50 Mtr's on a 16x8 rim. I have no top or doors on and was wondering if I went down to 12 psi if I would be pushing it. What do you guys run?

Never higher than 11-12 PSI.

38.5x16x15 TSL, 15x10 wheel

I have run 265/75R16 All Terrains at 6 psi before without beadlocks. Lots of grip to be had down there at the single digit pressures. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Hmmm, I would really like to take it down to 10 if i could get away with it. I have a full size spare and on board air...incase I bust a bead /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

8-10... 39.5 TSL.

pffft... 15" rims. 16.5s are for ricers. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If I were you I would not go past 15 psi on 16 inch wheels. I run my 37 12.50x15 mt/r's at 12-14 psi on the trail, but I have 15 inch wheels. 15 inch wheels have a saftey bead on them which allows you to run them at lower pressure without worring about blowing a bead. 16 inch wheels do not have a saftey bead and therefore should not be run below about 15-16.

ehhh, 16" wheels have a safety bead... its 16.5s that don't.

Plus the 12.50 on an 8" rim helps hold the bead, right?

generally. I have 15" wide tires on 10" wide rims. Seems to work ok.

I had this discussion with some of the AZ guys about my truck.

I run 35x12.5x15 MTR's on 15x8's. I have been told by a few respectable guys who run MTR's (az-k5, therobzilla, FWP) that with the MTR's the majic number for the rocks is 17-18 PSI.

After this the sidewall bulge to much and you start cutting tires. You also start to loose more and more clearence with the less amount of PSI you have.

17PSI is the number for the rocks, lower for sand.

This is 18psi. The tire is only suspended by the sidewall over a 2-3ft dropoff.

If you are running 16" rims then you might get away with a little less PSI since you have a little less sidewall then a 15" rim.

Bias are stiffer so require less pressure.

Radials at 18 PSI are probably about the same as a bias at 10-12.

Re: What tire pressure do you run while wheelin\'?

I run 8psi in the sand, arround 15 everywhere else. But i do have the Bias claws

Re: What tire pressure do you run while wheelin\'?

Thats why my friends with Super Swampers get away with running such a low pressure. I think I will stick with the 15 psi I have been running. It seems to do the job well enough. /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif

Re: What tire pressure do you run while wheelin\'?

I did some experiments on the hard concrete garage fllor a while ago with my 16x10 rims and 38x13 TSLs. I put a 4x4 chunk of wood on the floor and drove over it with one tire. At 15 psi, I could still feel the truck lift as it crawled over it. At 12 it still lifted a tiny bit, but at 10 the tire flexxed right over the wood with no lift at all. I ran at 12 the next trip, and it worked awesome. Of course, thats not much rocks... mostly muddy trail lines with logs to cross.
So, generally, I drop them to around 12 or so for my wheeling.

I run 35 psi, the mud that I play in doesn't care what pressure I run.

You might be shocked if you actually aired down.

I have never actually tried it, but I will next time just to see. The mud I run in (our lake) is soft clay and really has no bottom so I always figured that pressure wouldn't matter. I also run 16.5's, so I don't want to go too low and loose a bead. I've seen a lot of trucks loose a bead in the deep stuff with 16.5's. Maybe it's time for 15's? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
