So I'm going to be pulling my tanks and cleaning the gas out for my diesel conversion. I'm guessing I have about 10-15 gallons of old gas in them. I really don't have extra storage for year old gas. Any idea who might take it or what I could do with it (besides dump it in the back yard and have a bonfire)?

10-15 gallons is way more than I've dealt with, but I dump that stuff in with my oil recycling containers that get picked up curbside. Some cities have hazardous waste disposal sights that are even free. We do.

Bonfire might be the least damaging way if you can't dispose of it properly.

Make a craigslist ad for free gas and i'll bet it is gone quicker than you think. :D

Put it in plastic milk jugs and take it to your nearest trailer park and sell for a $1 a gallon. The huffers will eat that stuff right up. ;) :haha:

just ran some 5 year old gas in my riding lawn mower. ran just fine.

your 1 year old stuff should be o.k. hell run it in somthing.

if you think there is junk or water in it. go to the local fabric store. get a peice of felt. then use this to filter the gas. water will get traped in the felt.

totally semi-off-topic one about old fuel here..... :o

this is a daily part of my job in the marine biz.... i must suck out a tank a week.... and on boats, thats usually 50 to 300 gallons... it's common, boats sit on land for yrs, get water in tanks, etc....

the whole fuel thing has really become an issue in recent yrs with the ethanol and phase separation... while the fact that any water infiltration is now turning to alcohol is good for corrosion, etc... it goes bad MUCH quicker than standard old gas... a decade ago, you might have fuel get stale in a yr, or it might be runnable 3 yrs old....

now with the ethanol, guaranteed if it's 2 yrs old, it's gonna be stale..... I wont even get into what it does to filters and rubber parts... :eek1:

we end up with many 55 barrels of various "old" fuel at the marinas...... and yes, we have been known in the past to run select stuff in our cars... :haha:

I'd run it in something. If your worried about it then only put a few gallon in each fillup. Friend that works at boat shop had run old gas they remove. Only time he had a little problem was adding 15 year old gas...

One of the perks I miss most about working in the junkyards was the FREE gas we'd get from junked cars..it seemed many folks cars always blew a motor right after filling the tank!..and since its a royal pain to get gas out of later model tanks with the anti-siphon ball and "flapper" in the filler neck, few people ever drained the gas, especially if it was a few months old..

We used to hoist the cars up with the forkloader and use an air chisel to poke a hole in the tank in the lowest corner and catch it with a funnel we made from an old Poulan Springs water cooler bottle and a length of filler neck hose, drained it into a clear 55 gallon plastic drum, and we'd let it sit undisturbed at least a day or two before attempting to use any of it..then we'd use a transfer pump to suck out what we needed off the top of the barrel, all the water would settle to the bottom and it was easy to tell where the gas ended and the water began..when we got down to the watery stuff,we'd dump it in another barrel to be hauled off as waste, though many times my boss simply poured in on the seats of a junk car headed for the crusher, and 90% of it would evaporate very fast in the hot summer sun..

We had a WIX gas filter like gas pumps use that had a water separator drain on it (almost identical to the diesel fuel filter on my '82 GMC 's 6.2)--we'd drain any water out of it daily, and if we were really paranoid we'd use cotton in a screened funnel to filter it as we dumped it in our vehicles..T-shirts work good!.:D

We didn't have much trouble using "old" gas as long as it wasn't super stale or varnished,my carbed vehicles burned just about anything, though my co-workers fuel injected cars did clog a few fuel filters and idled crappy on some of the stuff se used..but I didn't mind having to put a new gas filter on every month or two,for 3 bucks and 40+ bucks of free gas,it was worth it!..I used it in my lawn tractors and mowers too, with few issues..

Todays gas evaporates a lot faster than the old leaded gas did..leave a pail out to the air and it'll be 90% gone in a day or two, especially if its in the sun..

i agree w/ sweetk30. run it in the mower and weed whacker. cut it w/ a little fresh gas if you feel you need to.
