my truck is a 89 v3500 crewcab 454,465/205 410 gears and i have a 400 k case with gen 1 ord doubler
truck is my dd so should i
1)go with 400
2)keep 465
and me sending them to anyone to try out the better option is out of the ? :D
thanks for the help

Depends on weather you prefer auto or manual. Low gear on 465 may be attractive for a crawler but watch out for coupler failure.

DD? Sounds expensive given the price of gas. Maybe an OD or diesel would be in order...

Automatic trans failures (even TH400's) are MUCH more common than 10 spline coupler failures.

Anyway, I think his dilemma is whether to keep the 465/205 (or maybe even 465/203/205) or switch to a 400/203/205.

Do you want to put the doubler in the truck? It will take a bit of work to get the 465 to work with the doubler.

If the 465/205 is the same vintage as the truck, he's got it made IMO. The tranny and T-case would be 32 spline without any coupler. Seeing as the doubler he has is also a 32 spline unit it wouldn't take much to attach the doubler set-up to the 465 and have the best of both.

Either way, the 465 will help fuel mileage some...

trustyk5, your right its a hydro 465.i dont mind the 465 and a 6bt is the future plans for the truck but first the wifes burb(she stole it from me:D) gets the 6bt.

If you like standard transmissions because of there reliability, why not look into a NV3500 tranny. It is 5 speed with OD and made for trucks. I like the ruggedness of the 205 transfer case but the cost of an adaptor to mate with this 3500 might be costly. Perhaps obtaining the 3500 mated to whatever transfer case it came with might be cheaper and just as reliable. I believe the 3500 used a hydraulic throwout bearing instead of a mechanical one.
With the NV3500 being around for 10+ years they may be gathering dust in the junk yards store room. Since most people want automatics you might get a sweet deal.
I would investigate what different transfer cases were used on this tranny and which one was the toughest. The junk yards here tag the components by vehicle, series, year, and mileage.

Yes, but that plan involves removing the current doubler setup, which doesn't sound like what he is looking for. He wants to keep the doubler, and so swapping to a single transfer is going to cost him those extra gear ranges.

I would say that the 465 is the best bet, fuel mileage and potential for trans failures in auto's would be enough to justify it.

There is a very good reason NV3500s are "are gathering dust in junk yards and peoples store rooms. The reason they can be had cheaply, is becauuse they are Junk.
IMO a 700r4 is stronger than a 3500
A NV3500 would never hold up behind a BBC.

I vote for the 465. Unless you happen to have a NV4500 laying around and some spare $$$

the 400/doubler is holding down the floor in the garage.465 205 is in the truck so i can just pull the 400 and bolt to the 465?

no 4500s laying around and what is this $$$$$$$$$$$$ stuff:haha:

Why do you want to swap? I say stick with what you got. It's your DD your not going to wheel it, so no reason for a doubler.

I certainly wouldn't call the 3500 junk, both Chevy and Dodge put it behind V8's in their manual trans equipped half ton trucks.

I certainly wouldn't swap a 465 or TH400 out for an NV3500 though.

this truck is my work horse
examples
take out tree trunks(pull them over and then out)
i used it to remove some concrete from my porch(i hooked on to the chainlink fence used for rebar)
i really use my truck as a tractor/truck so a little extra gearing couldn't hurt, right?

besides a 2000.00 paperweight is killing me

I've always used the winch for that kind of stuff, no sense in stressing the drivetrain on that kind of stuff unless your doing it for the coolness factor.

Since you have the late model (32 spline, round pattern) 465/205 setup you should be able to remove your 205 and install the doubler that you have with no modification (other than shifter and crossmember stuff).

Well all I have to say about that is...... Put your money where your mouth is....Why dont you put a NV3500 behind your 383?

Well, for starters, I have no use for an overdrive ;)

But did you read my last post? All I said was that both GM and Dodge felt comfortable putting them behind small blocks in their 1/2 ton pickups.

I also said I wouldn't swap a 465 or TH400 out for one. The 3500 is a lighter duty trans than an SM465 or NV4500, no question. Lighter duty does not equal trash; it just may not be adequate for a big, heavy truck used to move big, heavy things.

I certainly didn't mean for my last post to sound confrontational but maybe you took it that way

and gm still puts 10 bolts behind their genIII v8s as well...does that mean an 8.5 10b is a good rear? esp with any abuse?
