What do I take apart and look at inside this 208. :dunno:

Was told it might not be any good so I need to look at it before I put in in my truck.

Subd. I took the cover off of mine once, wasn't anything crazy. There is a spring that sits in there that will fall out of place. Only way I was able to get it reinstalled was to take the come off and hold the spring while I put the cover back on.
But if you have it sitting upright on a bench instead of in the truck you will be ok.
Other than that I gots nuttin.

I would highly recommend doing all three input/output seals while it's out.

Definitely do the seals. If you're going to split the case, take a look at the chain/gears and speedometer drive gear. You'll want to check for a stretched chain or abnormal wear on any of the components. Be a good time to replace the bearings for peace of mind.

I'd replace the plastic shift fork pieces also. They are one part that likes to fail and would be dirt cheap to do if you have it opened up.

Found the problem!
Surprisingly the shift fork pads are in awesome shape!

This is the first pic of some planetary needle bearings in the drain hole.

I got more pictures coming just cant seem to load them all at one with Photo Bucket.:doah:

Planetary housing...maybe I could weld it! :haha:

Who said they are virtually indestructible??? Rene :D

Last one I took.

I guess I`m on the hunt for a different 208! :eek1::haha:

But now I know what to look for inside one of these transfer cases.

Wow, planet failure. I haven't heard that one yet. I'm sure it happens and I just haven't noticed. Good thing you tore it apart!!

my first truck had a 208 do this . only way to limp it to buddys house was 4low with lots of noise and chunking sounds .

208 or 241 from a th400 or 465 of same round 6 bolt pattern should swap right in place.

I had the planetary in a 208 blow up like that. Locked both outputs up too. Forget about trying to fix it or find a new one. Just look for a whole new case. I have a 27 spline NP208 that I'll sell you.

The 208 planet carrier isn't very heavy duty, definitely one of the big upgrades they made when the 241 replaced it.
