I´m looking to buy a 14bff. and I think that it has a limited slip inside.
Does it matter what´s inside if I want to have a Detroit locker inside??

Yes, you will need an open carrier if you plan on installing a detroit into a 14BFF axle.

Sorry, I´m not a registered member so I couldn´t read it.

When you install a detriot you replace the internals of the diff, are you guys sure that it wont fit? (C´mon I really want this to work..) ;)
I´ve tried to find information about this on the detroit website but nothing..

Thanks,
Sebastian

the spider section in a open and detroit is 4 pin cross. the factory gov lock / limited slip is 3 pin cross. wont fit. my thread linked on hear before has great pics of all the stuff you need to know about the carriers.

Here is a pic of a detroit for a 14FF you can see the 4 pins SweetK30 is talking about. It is really simple to install. Open the carrier remove all gears and shims, install detroit, bolt up carrier.

That is true to an extent. You replace the internals of the carrier. The detroit locker has the 4 pin cross of the open style 14BFF carrier. Since the gov-loc 14BFF's use a 3 pin "Y", the detroit will not work in the gov-loc unit. Search around, I'll bet you can find a used open carrier pretty cheap.

What about shimming the gears?
This guy also has a 14bff with an open carrier but it has 3,71 gears and not the 4,10 gearing that I need. I cant just swap the two carriers without shimming the gears can I? If not, is it possible to weld the LS version?
I do 50% wheeling on the streets, will I break it when running on asphalt?

Thanks,
Seb.

The 14FF does not use shims. The carrier is located by threaded inserts that press against the bearings. They are also used to set the bearing pre-load on the carrier bearings. The pinion bearing pre-load is set by using a Crushsleave between the 2 pinion bearings in the pinion retainer. You can take any carrier from any 14FF and move it to another one all you have to do is adjust the threaded collars to set your carrier pre-load and backlash. The only shims in a 14FF are for setting pinion depth but they are simple to install since the pinion is housed in its own carrier that easily unbolts from the center section. The shims go between the center section and the pinoin carrier. If I have thouroughly confused you let me know and I will try to find some pics.

thanks guys!

I´ll buy the open carrier with 3.73 (or 3.71 or whatever it is.. :doah: ) ;) Then I´ll install the 4.10 gears that I want plus the detroit.

:D :D

Good luck setting up the used gears. Sometimes it goes easy, sometimes you'll give up infrustration. Ask me how I know :( :doah: I'll never set up another set of used gears..EVER! :haha:

Well I´m gettin a new set so hopefully it will be a bit easier.. :wink1: :wink1:
