What to look for?

Hello everyone, I am getting ready to go off to college and looking to get a more reliable, better gas milage truck. My k10 is getting too built to be a good DD anymore. I was thinking maybe a newer S10. I do not want to spend a whole lot of money. What should I look for... 4.3? 89 and up? what would you get if you were in my position? Thanks in advance

4.3 all the way, no other choice, if you get a 2.8, I won't let you in the test forum anymore LOL seriously tho, get a 4.3L, and yeah, 89 or newer. I just bought a 90 with a 4.3 for $1000

sounds good to me, now its just finding one for the right price... then talkin my dad into a loan so i can work it off...
