What to set timing too?

Ok.. I have a mutt of va motor and don't know what to set timing too?

1991 caprice police 350 L05 hyd roller
1996 Tahoe vortex heads
Wei and power plus+ vortex dual plane intake
Med dizzy
Med 6al hot box
Holley truck avenger aluminum edition

sm465 manual trans

I don't know much about timing. I've got a timing light... 10 degree before? Truck constantly running like crap cuz I don't have timing set.

ok so started from beginning..
checked carb...
holley.. front / back float good.. take screw out - rock truck and trickles out
start truck and hit with timing light.. ummm id say it was at about 38 degrees.. LOL...

whoops..

fixed that to 12 degrees. seems better. took it for a ride earlier (before adjusting) and it was all over the road. drivers caliper sticking - the one that was in the mud for 5h... well seals rotten and caked with mud...
so tomorrow is 2 new d60 calipers
then onto adjusting the caddy rear ebrake and maybe new pads...


she seems to be running nice now. Will need to fuss with air/fuel screws and idle hopefully tomorrow...
 
Sounds like your ignition parts are in great shape...that is important before tuning the carb.
Do you have a vacuum gauge? That can be a good tuning tool for idle mixture.
With the vortex heads I'd start at 12* BTDC at 6-700 rpm and play with it by listening for knock and seat of the pants responsiveness. Bump it 2* at a time until you hear knock or performance declines then back it up. Limit total timing (Initial + centrifigal) to 34-36 all in by 2800-3000, Without vacuum advance hooked up.
