What tool to remove Spindle Nut ***UPDATE***

I removed the lock out hubs but now I need the correct tool to remove the retaining ring so I can get the rotor/hub off.Its a 6 slot one that is smaller then all the ones i am finding at the parts stores. Its this one I believe http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/lis27400.html anyone in CA know who might have one local?

Not familar with SW hubs, but it sounds like the same thing lots of others have.
Not a clue as to what you call it. Its a piece of thin metal wound around and around about 3 times.
Exactly like a Slinky with no slink. Wipe it off clean, or spray it with a little cleaner, and you should see the end of it.
It will have a little taper on the end which will let you get a thin tool like a knife you don't mind breaking between the end and the side of the hub and prize inward toward the center, and then out to the outside when you get it prized in some.

Then, you just unwind it out.

Simple once you see it. Just keep thinking Slinky.
 
Actually it was a heavy burr on the axle shaft that wasn't allowing the other half of the hub out. Noe I need the correct tool to remove the 6 pin ring so i can get the hub off. Anyone know where i can get one? Tried 3 vatozones and 2 kragens and they have the 6 pin one but way to big~ anyone know what size as well? Its a 1/2 ton 10 bolt front
 
If you believe its that one then order it :dunno: . I have one for my 76 dana 44 and one for my 14 BFF. I got both of mine at oreillys/kragens and they work great.
 
I'm no mathematician but it is a six prong.

looks like a snap-ring from here, lower RH corner looks open like a snap-ring. you trying to remove the hub bearings or spindle bearings?
 
so the lower rh notch, is it open, or is it just grease making it look open? i thought 10bolts had 4 prong nuts, one, and then a lock ring, and then a second.. either way, those can usually be taken loose with a screwdriver if you dont have the socket

Every D44/10b I've known has had a four-pin nut ... I'm wondering if that thing IS a big lock-washer, though it should be between the two nuts, not outermost.

Anyway, duh... totally forgot, yep, big flathead and a hammer will slide those things out. You may trash the nut, but at least you'll identify what the heck it is :D

Hell, I put together a 10b and 14bff with a screwdriver and a hammer. use a little finesse lol
 
There are several threads on here, even one real recent showing some good pictures of how that comes apart. I am doing mine shortly, but I believe confedneck is correct, it's a snap ring type wire spring set up. You'll need long needle nose to close it up a touch and then pull the "snap ring" out. If you search I know you will find it. Perhaps in the 73-91 section, and I think thebeast88_k5 was the recent poster.
 
This thing aint't coming off with a screwdriver and hammer.Its torqued. How much i do not know. I havent a clue what the original owner did. This thread is the same as mine http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280708&highlight=spindle+nut intrestingly my axles axles were cucv 10 bolts that had detroit lockers and 4.10's that the military installed for some kind of exercise there were running and the blazers were Opfor out on Barstow. These pics on the other thread prove they are out there.

dude, it looks like a snap ring, is that lower rh notch fully cut out? if it is, it's not a lock ring, it's a snap ring of some sort. wish i was closer, i'd help ya, a front end rebuild on a set of 10 bolt hubs should take 10 minutes after the wheels are off
 
I remember that thread. I don't know what the guy ever did to get it off.

Have you checked for a screw inside one of the holes??

If you have access to a welder and a grinder, you should be able to make a tool that will move it fairly easily.
You don't have to fit all six holes. Just grind two pieces of steel that will fit in opposite holes and stick out past the hub.
Put them in the holes, and then weld a bar across the ends and twist.

I assume that the six round holes are where the outside of the hub mount. Is that a piece behind the nut, or part of the nut?
If its a piece behind the nut, which I'm fairly sure it is, then never mind. But, if there is a chance it is part of the nut, you might want to check for an Allen socket set screw inside one of the holes.

I saw an off the wall brand hub that locked the outside nut down with a hidden set screw into a washer with a series of holes.
 
Hmmm, I've never seen one like that before. Let us know if you find a socket that works.
Even if you can't find one I guarantee you that it'll come out with a punch and a hammer then you could just replace them with regular 4 slot spindle nuts so you can use a regular socket in the future.
 
I've seen a socket with a 6 pin at Autozone I think it was. I think they labeled it for a Ford or something.
