i am getting ready to do a reman of a 14ff with 5.13 gears. i have a like new detroit locker and a welder 220v mig.

if you had your choice what would you pic?

i had a detroit before with 38" swampers and auto tranny. never realy ever felt it unlock at all. so if i can save the locker for somthing else and weld it and be fine good.

some street / highway / heavy off road / snow fun. i have a tbi350/4l80/203rangebox/205 twin sticked. in a 132" w/b crewcab.

thanks guys.

I have a Detroit on my 14 bolt and I love it, it unlocks when it should, hell I cant even tell its there most of the time until I mash the throttle, meaning that I am not a fan of a welded rear on the street at all. My 2 cents

Offroad Lincoln locker all the way.:weld: On the road some put the detroit in.:D

Detroit. Like mine. You only notice it locking and unlocking if you use the gas a bit much going around a corner.

If you have a 4.56 carrier then definitely don't weld it. Those aren't too easy to find around here at least.
I've used a Lockright in a 14ff with excellent results.

as has already been stated, if its gonna see any street use at all, a spool or welded carrier is an absolute no no. :shame:

My 14ff is welded and I don't mind it. The truck does see the street a fair amount of time too (although lately it's been tapering off).
If I had a detroit sitting in front of me on the work bench it'd be a no-brainer... go detroit.
But in my case it was free to weld it and saved a good chunk of change compared to buying a detroit.

Detroit, you already have it might as well...

Detroit for sure if it sees any street time. Welded diffs eat tires when street driving.

Both myself and several others in our club run welded rear diffs. Granted none of them see any daily driver duty but all are licensed street legal vehicles and see a moderate amount of street time on trail day (between different trails and from the parking lot to the trails). A buddy of mine also spent years driving his 42" tired truck to and from the trails including numerous out of state trips. I never went quite as far, but made many 3+ hour round trips with a welded rear axle. None of us have ever had any bad experiences on the road with the only "issue" being chirping tires around corners. I did notice my rear 13/38-16 TSL's (kinda' skinny) on the Blazer did wear noticably faster, but they were also heavily grooved which probably played a role. My buddy with 42x15's on a longbed 7k lb. truck had only a slight bit more rear tire wear (basically had to measure the tread depth to tell the difference on his).

I tend to agree with everyone but maybe for a different reason I like the Detroit off road because it can give you that little half inch you may need to get turned vs a welded diff. I have seen this happen many times where a welded diff just pushes and pushes where in a Detroit would actually take a half turn to lock and that half turn is exactly what you need to get front end around

So my vote is Detroit all the way

I'm welded right now and it does fine on the street. I drive around town and on 80 mile round trips to go wheeling. Definately eats the tires up quick. There are dark tire marks all over my driveway also. I'll probably Detroit it soon.

Forgot to add, the design of the 14FF allows you to weld up the spiders and side gear into a ball (like a mini-spool) and reinstall into the carrier with no modifications or welding to the carrier itself. That way it's pretty easy to try out the welded diff and if you don't like it just slap in a Detroit. This was my thinking years ago but still have the welded diff.

I have a detroit locker, thats he only way I would go if your going to run on the street. I don't think I would want a welded rear on the street in the snow and ice.

having had both on ice I would rather be welded, sometimes if the Detroit lets go or locks up a little to quick it can make the truck bobble, something I normally don't feel, but it can be enough to make the truck lose traction. This being said I have driven a detroited truck alot in the winter and you get used to it so its no big deal. I would much rather have an ARB but thats not what we are talking about here

I will be the lone wolf here and say Gov-lok.

Mine works great in all types of environments, you just have to pay alittle care when locking it up.

Saying that, if you have a detroit in front of you might aswell use it.

love my gov - loc in street truck. had one in last offroad truck liked it.

but with all the stuff i have now i think detroit will be best thanks guys.
