i was lookin through craigslist and found an auto tranny from a '98 chevy 1ton, what tranny is that? 4L80E? he says its had 1.5 years of use and still has the GM goodwrench sticker on it. he's askin $475. seem like a good deal?

$475 is a good price, but you will need either a full manual valvebody or a transmission computer to run it. If it is a 4l80e which it should be.

i've thought about running a 4L80e many times because i want to keep the overdrive, and also like the strength it has compared to the current 700r4 ive got. what exactly does full manual valvebody do? does that mean i shift it myself, basically like a manual w/o clutch?

that or a couple companies make computers to run the transmission.

Seen some go on Ebay lately for something like 300-600. So thats a fair price, if its in good shape. I've been looking because my 4l80E is starting to take a **** on me. Likely I'll just overhaul mine or actually diag the problem like I should. I don't know if its actually possible to fully bypass the electrical portion of the 4l80E.... I guess if it were a FULLY manual valve body(and a really good one, which is about the cost of that transmission) it would work out. Otherwise a standalone is needed.

hmm. i really want to swap b/c im goin to be doin a motor swap eventually, and am thinkin that this might cost about the same as a 700r4 that can take the added abuse. later this summer ill also be building my doubler, so i guess now would be a good time since it would be 32spline input instead of 27.

Hell yes if it is a running tranny. Some cores alone go for about $300-400.
