What trans in a '90 v1500 'Burb?

You may have a 4l60
700R4 was renamed 4l60 in 1990.:D Exact same trans diferent name.
Only the great wise ones at GM. That live on the tallest mountin of spare parts know why they did that.

What engine is in the Burb? If it's a 350 then it's probably a 700R4/4L60 if it's a 454 then it would be a TH400.

After thinking about it for a minute i don't think the OBS ever got a 454 in a 4WD so it should be a 700R4/4L60.

I was under the impression that the 700 and 4l60e are not the same trans...the 4l60/4l80 being electronically controlled whereas the 700r4 is not? Or are the 4l60 and 4l60e totally different transmissions?

Anyways, the link I posted says that the 700 was renamed in 1991, rather than 1990.

This particular 'Burb has a small block. And most likely a 700r4. And you were correct to think there was no factory big block option in a 4x4 'Burb. In fact, I don't think there was a factory big block option in any GM 4x4 till '80 or '81.

Joe, the 700R4 became the 4L60 and then it changed to the 4L60E (full electric).

Yup 4l60E came out in 92. When GM switched to full electronic control.
90 and 91 were 4L60. Same trans as 700R4.

I hate to throw a wrench into things guys, but my '90 GMC Suburban came from GM with a 700r4.

700R4 and 4L60 are the same trans just given a different designation. The 4L60E is a full electric version of the 700R4/4L60.

I understand that. When I had mine rebuilt the last time I had to go to the dealer to get a part and by vin number they said it was a 700r4. That's all I'm sayin'.
