i have a th400 but i have no idea what t-case fits it. i want to strap on a np205 but i ave no idea if i can just slap it on. can i?? help me plez!!

depends on what adapter you have... i just got my adapter for the 400/205 combo today. :D if you're wantin to do the 400/205 combo, i'd suggest checkin out ORD's website and readin up on it... thats how i figured out what i needed. http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/doubler.htm granted, the link is for the doubler but there's lots of good trans/t-case info in there...

Get a 32 spline np205 , and a th400 to np205 adapter .

Any transfercase that was offered behind one , will fit one stock if the input shaft and adapter matches .

Otherwise ANYTHING , can be made to fit ANYTHING , either with aftermarket stuff or custom made stuff .

i have been trying to figure it out for a few weeks now and asked ck5 about 3 times and i have never understood until pauly broke it down. now i fully get it. thanks guys

The first thing you need to do is measure the stick out length of the output shaft on the TH400, this will tell you what t-case was originally mated to it.

If the shaft stick out is 1 3/8" it originally had a 203 mated behind it, if it's 2.5" then it had a 208 mated to it, and if it is 4.5" then it had a 205 mated behind it.

nice! now those measurements are from the inside where the shaft begins right?

ok so from the inside it is exactly 4.5" so it had a np205 right? so i dont need the conversion plate just the 32 spline np205?

but i dont have the transfer case so how can i measure it? the shaft is 4.5 when the tape it as far as i can get it into the trany

You will need the factory TH400/205 adapter that is about 4" thick along with the proper trans stick out to mate a 205 behind your TH400.

the adapter just mounts to the end of the trans right? it still has the origanal one on it but its only about 1/2" thick. is that not what your talking about?

Yes the t-case adapter bolts to the 6 mounting holes in the end of the trans case. The shortest TH400 adapter is for a 203 and is about 1.1" thick.

on the end of the trany there is a plate on the end with a star like pattern on the inside that meets the t-case. the trany shaft is 4.5" overall but only sticks out about an inch past the plate.

ok so i need a 205 adapter and a 205 t case but do i also need to change the shaft?

In order to bolt a 205 behind that trans you will need to swap the output shaft for the correct one and also find a TH400/205 adapter.
