Hey Time to replace my winch cable. I run an 8274 and had 100' of 3/8 on it. What's everybody else runnin for their 1 tonned rigs and if I go to 7/16 how much will fit on my spool. I use my winch a lot and has done fine with the 3/8 but isn't a big deal to go bigger.. I noticed the other day a buddy of mine had a brand new cheap winch wth 7/16.

If I was buying new I would go with rope. Way safer, lighter, and stronger at the same size. Some size down to fit more rope. You can get the weight ratings from anyone who sells it.

With rope it looks like you need an aluminum fairlead. I'm cheap and need this in the next couple of days for a comp on saturday. I'll phone my local parts store that might have rope and check it out. I can get cable cheap and fast so will probably go that route again. Just not sure if I go 7/16 how much will fit on my spool or if it's even needed. 3/8 has worked in the past.

IIRC, you want a hawse fairlead, not a roller (*unlike* steel cable, IMHO) ... and I think a *new* steel one would be okay, but if there's ANY imperfection in the surface (i.e. it's been used with cable) it'll tear the rope to shreds... so yeah, you'd want to switch to something kinder to the rope.

Besides the aluminum ones, I've seen UHMWPE fairleads (that's, umm, fancy plastic, like cutting board material only denser IIRC) that were sexy and not so pricey.

this might sound stupid, but if u dont have money for the fairlead now and still want rope, maybe you can put tape on the fairlead,so it wont chew up the rope. just for this weekend and save up to get a new one or aluminum after that. i actually have never owned a winch so this idea might just be stupid.

I just bought a Winch Rope From Viking Winchline I Love it 3/8 125' 19,600lbs saved me 22.9 lbs up front. If you talk to them at winch line or viking ask for Thor tell him I sent ya see what he'll do. Good Luck oh yeah I say if you can get the ROPE, Cable is great and time tested but bottom line if you wheel with you family Rope is the safest way. C-ya

If you compete then you should use rope. It's way safer. When I bought my winch I took the cable off and put rope in right from the start.
