what would you do...if you needed a new engine?

considering the amount of money you are going to have to spend to keep your k5 in dd running condition, i think you should purchase a beater that is in good running condition and gets good fuel economy. you figure you're going to drop at least a couple grand to get your k5 back in shape and you're still only going to get 10-15 mpg on that kind of budget. sure you can pick up a diesel engine and drop that in, but how much are you going to spend restoring a used motor and prepping your truck to accomodate such an engine. so get a beater that will help you save money and over time build your k5 the way you really want it. you already have a lot of nice equipment on the k5, so make it your 100% project truck. pull the engine and build it for some bad ass hp and keep the ****ty mpg, because now you have another ride that will make up for the ****ty mpg. just my $0.02

i know what your sayin. i was talkin to my parents tonight and they said there is a possiblity i could get another vehicle for the "family". im thinkin id want to get a pickup, maybe a used 2wd or 4wd 5spd tacoma. its a toy so it should last a long time and get good gas milage. id still want to drive my k5 on the road a bit, so ill "limit" myself to no bigger than a 383:haha:

of course before i go crazy i have to get another vehicle

Consider a TBI 454 from a same era truck. good power, not to exotic, pretty straight forward swap, and in your application possibly better mileage as the engine won't have to work as hard , Not to mention cheaper you could probaly find a 2 wheel drive burb with that motor for 1500-2500 dollors swap the bigblock to your blazer put your 350 in the sub and then resell the sub for what you paid for it nearly free bigblock. I've done the Vortec head swap and yes they do make good power but your looking at a 600 dollor minum just in the heads and intake ( for new stuff I realize it can be done the e-bay route) anyways for good relable cheap power it's kinda hard to beat a BBC

ramjet 350, 350 hp and 400 lbs of torque. just add fuel and power, totally easy swap. then you don't have to worry about building the engine any stronger. jegs has them for $4,899.99.

thats my plan when my 350 goes

First off the Ram Jet 350, great motor just one problem the intake for the fuel injection get in the way of the A/C lines if you plan on keeping them.

Now as for a 383 i can tell you from personal expierence they dont get good mileage. I have the HT383 in my blazer with a T-400 33's and 3.73 gears. I can pull 9mpg on a GOOD day. So it pretty much sits in the garage alot.:doah: Cuz i just cant afford to drive it, with gas prices the way they are right the moment.

Now as for the 454 tbi, not really happening either my dd is a 95 K2500 with a 454 tbi 4l80e and 3.73's i can get about 12 out of that, on a long high way trip as long as i stay 70 and below i can get about 13.5 out of it.

I know you love your blazer i love mine too, but blazer and economy are not meant to be together. You are much better off getting the taco like you want to get and that way you can build your blazer the way you want it to be and not have to worry about MPG.

Hope this helps:D

hmm....well the engine is not dead yet so ive got time to sort it out.

i found a 350 crate motor 280hp/340tq direct bolt into mine for $2800.
If I would have bought my heads and block, thats about what I would have payed for my 383. I got te heads and block for free though. All in all I spent about 2000 or so on the motor, and I built it myself. I think everyone should build thier own motor at least once, I found it to be a worthwhile experience.

Numbers? My motor is making about 350HP and around 450lb/ft of torque. That my friend is GOBS of torque, not a caddy but still a bunch. I dont know the numbers for sure, but Gm's 383HTwhich I copied has 340/435, but I have stuff like roller rockers, port matched intake, and TBI, which adds to the torque equation.
