What year column Fits in a 74

I've about had it with this column. Its been nothing but hassle.. Im thinking of taking it out and putting a non tilt in. I know a guy who has one with keys for 50 bucks. I might just swap it out and sell this one. I dont think I really need tilt wheel anyway.

Sorry, I misread that, yes the little spring should force the return of the cylinder from Start to Run. You have gotten this far, why give up now, pretty easy to pull the lock cylinder and run a rag through to make sure that the dust and debris is cleared.

Doesnt the lock cylinder move inside its own casing? I dont remember it spinning in the column. That spring doesnt seem like much to push it back. I greased most everthing accept the actuator. I forgot and couldn't get any to it once together. I might try to do it in the next few days. I really dont want to tear it down again though. I spent 4 hours today working on it.

The lock cylinder does move in it's own casing, and they have been known to build up some dirt inside. It is pretty easy to just pop the wheel, pull the screw that holds the cylinder in, then clean and apply a light grease.

Your probably right. I think Ill tear it apart and try one more time thursday. Ill let you know how it goes. Im thinking maybe some extra grease on the actuator might help. It seems to want to swing back but I have to help it a little. Maybe the grease will help.

I have used wheel bearing grease, and never had any issues with it. By light grease I just mean don't apply a heavy amount like a wheel bearing. Usually a very small amount around the outside of the cylinder is enough for years.

Its a new cylinder so I dont know. What kind of grease should I use. I have pretty heavy stuff.

DO NOT use grease. Use a graphite spray instead. Grease will create the problem you're trying to eliminate. Use graphite on all moving parts. You'll be amazed how easy it will work for you.

Finally workes!!!

Well I decided screw it and went out there and tore it apart. I greased every moving part on there, put it back together and it workes great. Springs right back into run from start. I went and bought some wheel bearing grease. I coudl't find the graphite spray. But the grease I had before was black. This stuff was red and really slippery. Needless to say everything only took about an hour and it works owesome. Im pretty happy seeing as now I can keep my tilt wheel. You guys helped out alot especially lecric80 and I appreciate it. I did use the article in this link in case anyone else needs to work on their column. Its for an elcamino but they are almost identicle.

Now all I need to do is finish up my new wiring and Ill be back on the road.

Absolutely, the best is the graphite spray, but it did originally have grease in there.

Icebone, glad to hear it is working for you. As 4x4High said, take some time this spring or summer, tear it down and lube it with the graphite spray. It will prevent a lot of the dirt and debris buildup you have seen. In six months if you look at the grease, it will be very dirty.

I could probably do that. It was way easier to do once I had done it already. Thing came apart quick. Where do you get the graphite spray and what does it look like. Is it in a spray can? I looked at kragen and didn't see it.

I think Napa and others may carry it. But I know that Wally World and Home Depot would as well. It is a spray can similiar to WD-40

We sell it at my store. Just about any auto parts store should have it on the shelf or able to order it for you. If worse comes to worse i could send you a can.

Yeah I will keep you in mind if it starts getting sticky or feels like the grease isn't working. Right now though it feels pretty good. I also figured out what springs it back. It is the ignition switch. Not the little spring in the column. I took the switch off and pulled it to run and it springs back. I figure I am atleast an amature if not semi expert at column tear down now that I've done all this. I just about finished up my wiring today and things are looking good. I had an issue with the wiper setup seeing as their instructions didn't match my switch. So I had to do a little plug and play to figure it out. All I have left now is some screws and an issue with clearence on the electric oil gauge sender. Once those two small things are done I can fire it up. Also the guy who had it before had all the plug wires on the distributor one off. So The distributor is turned until the vacum advance is almost 90 degrees with the firewall. I also had to dig up a torque mount for the t-case as it was missing. Its all downhill now.
