What year did the HEI start ? My truck has a non-stock Eng w/ a HEI (it came with a 400 and has a 350 now) , and the guy at NAPA is telling me it didn't come with it.... ?

I'm having a stalling problem I'm trying to track down. The book says to start looking at the wires and such on the dist then check the fuel delivery. And since the coil ,cap and rotor look ancient I`m just going to replace them , cheap Ins and tune-up.

It was around 74-75. It depends on what model of GM vehicle you are referring to.;)

Your '77 K5 would definately have HEI. You may see if you can find a date code or casting number on your distributor to see what year it is.

1975 for the trucks. If you have an earlier truck that's had HEI added, just tell them it's a '75. I do ;)

So far just telling them its a 77 w/ a 350 has worked. Should have called Autozone and got the right info, but there phone was busy.So I figured come here and get the right info for sure.

I love dealing with the nitwits at Autozone . I have to tell them 76 Nova dizzy , 89 Suburban front end parts , 77 Blazer rear u joint , 83 Blazer gaskets , and on and on and on .

I miss the days you can walk in and ask for a small block water pump , and they only asked long or short .

Like everything else, it depends where you are. Here the NAPA is pretty good, Auto Zone sucks unless you talk to the manager (they pay the counter guys minimum wage - you get what you pay for). The best I've found is a small local store, especially when the owner is there.

i fully agree!

now a days most of the counter monkeys don't even know the difference between a short or long water pump...gone are the days where your parts guy actually knows about the parts, now they just know what their computer screen tells them!

you think thats bad, i just picked up an idler arm and the guy looks at me and says, "um, your gonna have to help me here, is that like ignition or something?" i'm thinkin is this guy for real?

Apparently I am fortunate in having a GOOD, locally owned, clueful-counter-person, parts house. Sure, they cost a bit more, but it's amazingly worthwhile when you only have to go ONCE. They know what an idler arm is, know me by name, and when I walk in with a distributor under my arm, can identify it and joke that "Did you want the spinning or non-spinning unit?" =))

Sure, I'll go to Kragen/Schucks/Checker or Vatozone, for spray paint, or switches or whatever plastic bubble-crap that my local place is out of ... but only if I have to, and never will I have the counterdroids get me crap from behind the counter :deal:

gone are the days of having 3 different motors for every single car, truck, and van also. You also have to remember that now yall aren't the majority anymore when you come in looking for parts...its probably 80%+ stuff built in the last 15 years. There is also very little money in older car and truck parts and they dont tend to need more than full tune up and sometimes chassis parts, for the most part.

if they were actaul mechanics...they wouldn't be counter guys. keep that in mind.

now, for the most part, i do have to agree with counter monkeys sucking nowadays...but the oreillys i work for has a GREAT group of guys and gals.

Like here the S. Autozone next to me is all mexicans and sucks. The North one is all white and I always get what I need the 1st time.NAPA is all older white guys and only the guy out in the machine shop knows what he`s doing...
Theres no Mom an Pop auto stores here I have found.

LOL the other night at the brand new Checkers I showed the guy how to use his touch screen to look up a oil filter for me.... :doah:

I think we are lucky haveing pretty popular trucks its not as hard to find parts at these stores for them.My moms had fords and an Old`s lately I have trouble getting the right parts for.
