what year did diesels start in chevy pick up??? like 73 to 87 pick up body style.. for full size, thanks

The first real diesel engine offered came in 1982, but before that there was the Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel that could be had from 1978 in the pickups; basically a 350 rebuilt for diesel that you'd do best to stay away from.

thanks for the info.. as for inspection, diesel engine is exempt right? as of emission.. and how many mpg would i be looking at if i add a 6.2 in my 80 gmc, as of now its 6 inch lift, will be getting 37 12.5 16.5 tires . now it has a 4.11 gearin. my engine is built 355 and average with 31 inch tire and 2.76 gear before. it average 6 mpg. so im hoping its better with 411 but i doubt it, thats why im learning abt diesels now, cause at some time i would like to travel with old truck, so how many mpg would i be looking at? and im sure the 78 will be the cab i get for 5.7 diesel and end up putting a rebuilt 6.2 in.. im just learning abt diesels now.. ofc my project will be probably next winter, just learning and see what to collect.. etc..

thanks in advance!

Diesels are not necessarily exempt from emissions testing. That is up to the state/locality. So you'd just have to clarify with your local emissions organization.

Yes in most casses the deisel is exempt from inspection. depends on your state. Like in TX it is safe inspection only. As for mpg, I got close to 22mpg with 4.88 and 39.5 boggers with a 4speed manual no overdrive on a trip one time.

thats exactly what i need! a longer mileage.. hmm... guess i got another project.. ill talk to my inspection guy soon to see whats up.. any of u pa guys know the diesel law??? let me know.. thanks!

It sounds like you're planning on swapping a diesel into a truck that's originally gas? I don't know about Pennsylvania, but most places that check emissions won't let you do that. The truck has to have a diesel VIN to be exempt.

that is why i say ill swap in a diesel cab;)

Longbedder, are you sure about that? I think if you meet the diesel emissions & equipment standards for that year & model vehicle you can.

It's best to check with your State anyway. Twice, since they sometimes give the wrong answer:rolleyes:

Oops, missed the part about the cab swap...

I asked at a referee station last year - they said it couldn't legally be done.
