What years did they have air/smog pumps?

Did they stop at some point after TBI came on the scene? Did the '90 and '91s have them?

My blazer is a California emissions and it DID NOT use an A.I.R pump system. I have seen A.I.R on TBI trucks though that was factory and they were usually federal emissions (49 state, not California) vehicles.

Strange, I would have expected the opposite.

I'm getting ready to do smog in AZ and I'm praying I can get by without the AIR pump. Mine's an 83, but I put TBI on it, so I want to have a viable story that I'm copying the emissions scheme of a later TBI model.

They typically only look at the emissions sticker on the radiator support regardless of the TBI for the visual part of the inspection. They may fail you if the sticker shows one is supposed to be there and it's missing.

I don't have an emissions sticker. Besides, it would show a ton of things that would be impossible to have, going from an uber-emissions carb tro TBI.

No sticker - no visual comparison. There are so many variations of the K5's emission stuff that no one would be able to know which one yours was and what it "should" have. You should be fine as long as the numbers come out as passing.

You are very wrong about that statement. EVERY smog shop is required to have a book that gives a list of the required emissions equipment for each year, make and model of vehicle for both Federal and California emission equipped vehicles.

My 90 K5 does not have the AIR pump, neither does my buddy's 89 K5. My 87 Crew Cab with 350 TBI does have it...go figure.

Required versus reality are two distinct differences. Are you saying that by VIN, the smog shop is going to be able to determine what every specific/individual vehicle is supposed to have? Unlikely.

BY make model - OK and that being said, the Blazer's smog set ups are vastly different even among the same model years.

You may have different experiences in CA.

i thought that if you upgraded to a newer style engine,it was supposed to be tested for that model of engine and year.if anything that tbi engine should run way cleaner than a 83 with the carb and emissions crap on it.good luck at the sniffer.arizona isnt as anal about that stuff as cali is it?i would think the upgraded tbi and ignition would make the truck more epa compliant as long as you have the cat in place and no emissions sticker in the engine bay.

I went to the junk yard and got an air cleaner from a 1990 TBI. It has the emission sticker on it still, so hopefully if they look at anything they'll look at that. It doesn't show an air pump, just canister, EGR, PCV.

I'm kind of confused because my current setup has an elbow thing going to the air cleaner for a breather. The new air cleaner has no other openings. Is the breather just a hose from the valve cover to that collar under the air cleaner? I'm going to ask on my air cleaner thread too...

The smog shop is "supposed" to look up any vehicle in question by year and model. If it cannot be determined whether it is a Federal or California emissions then they go by California standards since it is the strictest. Smog equipment will only vary if it is Federal or California equipped.

This is AZ not CA. They may still look up by vin, but I don't think they spend as much time digging in as they do in CA. It's a government facility with people waiting in line while cars cruise through. I'll find out soon. :(

my TBI 87 has A.I.R. and is originally a New York truck. I will look tomorrow but I think its a 49 state truck. Smog testing is getting ridiculous. They need to instate the rolling 25 year count. I was looking forward to that when I had my FJ40.

I had a 89 k2500 that did not have the smog pump, but the 88 K5 where I got the TBI 350 for my 79 did have the smog pump. However that is long gone, I think it got a few .30 rounds through it for better ventilation.:D (the eco nazis would hang me in cali)

AZ is completely unreasonable as far as that goes. Anything newer than like 1967 needs to be smogged every year. I have intense loathing for anyone who is any way connected to this torture they are putting me through. They have zero mercy on car enthusiasts here, especially not the 4x4 or street rod variety.

87 has been the only year I have seen it, though I don't recall ever looking under the hood of an 88, I know for a fact federal trucks 89+ don't have it. Both 87's that I saw with the AIR pump were Alaskan trucks.

Checked out your page. Nice rig you're building up there. Mine is an '84, stock with the smogged down 350 that runs as well as it can, all de-tuned as it is.

I would like to change the fuel system to an injected one but I am unsure if that would even be legal out here in California.

My '84 has the air pump, but it only injects the air on the left side.

If I upgrade, do I have to keep the air pump?

My 87 tbi which was originally from california and has california emissions has the air pump. Here in texas if a vehicle is 24yrs old or older it just has the safety check no smog check. I had to get the smog check this year but next year I will probably ditch the air pump since I won't have the smog check.

I can tell you how much fun it is to get a '72 FJ40 to pass every year...

It's not AZ, it's Pima (Tucson) and Maricopa (Phoenix) county having trouble meeting (federal?) air quality standards.
