Got a 84' Chevy dump with a J code 6.2 diesel and th400 that I'm considering swapping out for a 465/454. Trying to get an idea what a low miles power plant (85K) and rebuilt th400 should be worth.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff

Mods, if this is in an inappropriate forum ..sorry:doah:

Kind of a grey area IMO. If you get the feedback you need and decide to sell it please post it the classifieds forum though.

I also was wanting to know if I was to keep the 6.2 and stick in a 465 would this help my load hauling capicity? Went and got 7,800 lbs. of dirt yesterday with a total weight of 13,500 and just about killed the tranny and the motor.

Would you say this is overloaded?

Mod, if I do decide to sell motor or tranny or both I will move this to the "forsale" section.

Thanks, Jeff

Ummm yeah...just a smidge

Judging by what you seem to expect your load capacity to be I'd recomend a Topkick or C60.

Deal.

The dump I have now with 6.2/th400 replaced a 83' with a 8' bed a 350/sm465 and it hauled 7,000-7,500 all day long and did it for years!
Heck the only reason I retired it was the frame/dump body where rusting
apart, had many a load with a total weight of 12,500 -12,900 with no problems.

Does the th400 kill a 6.2 that bad? Would a sm465 make this thing more usable?

The TH400 does rob power, but your diesel may also not be pulling its own weight if the injectors are dirty and/or injector pump is worn out.

Also, what gear ratio does the truck have? That is the biggest factor that affects power that people overlook.

I've pulled loads like that between a truck and trailer with a 6.2L/SM465 powered '79 K20 and got there safely and just as fast as a 454 powered truck. But any truck with that kinda load is not going to be fast. 3500# over GVW isn't gonna kill it in one trip, but it will surely speed up the process fast. Unless your dump truck is rated for 12K as some of the longer wheel base trucks were?

States I hate , because they have superior wheeling to mine:

California..Colorado..Texas..Nevada..
Oregon..Oklahoma..

I think you missed about 35-40 states and 6 or 7 Canadian Provinces...:doah:

A long time ago i worked for a landscaper and he had a one ton (C30) dually with a dump box on it. Always overloaded (12K and up). It had a 250 cid straight 6, SM 465 and 4.56's or 5.13's. It wasn't fast but it always did the job. I'd check the gearing on yours...

A TH400 does eat a lot of power...

It is a long wheelbase with a 10' dump box. The truck has 225r 16 tires and 4.10 gears.

Looks like it's time to head over to the "wanted" section and hunt up the stuff for a sm465 conversion!

Thanks, Jeff

I only count states/Provinces that I've been to! But the list gets longer every summer wheeling trip:wink1:

There is your problem. 4.10 aren't going to cut it.
You need 4.56 or higher with the tires you have and the weight you want to pull.
A friend of mine had the 6.2/th400/4.56 gears and had some small E rated tires and it hauled easily the loads similar to yours.
He switched to 3.73's for mileage and it killed his towing ability.

I was actually wrong, they are 215 85R 16 E rated tires.

I will consider a gear swap if the switch to a 465 isn't a big enough improvement.

Thanks, Jeff
