rumbly truck
1/2 ton status
I have a 1985 gmc k-3500, with a stock 454, except a edelbrock performer manifold, and cam. It has 4.10s with a sm465, and 235-85-16s. The engine will pull the truck, from a dead stop on level ground to speed , in 4th gear. For a truck dont put to much cam in it. If you do you will hate it.Been there done that. The best thing you can do is call the the techlines and get their advice. If you call 20 times, you will get probably 18 different answers. But they will all be with in about 5% of were you need to be. I have used comp cams, edelbrock, chet herbert, crane, with good sucess. The cam is the brain of the engine, with a one track mind.Ya its great pulling to redline in every gear, but get one that will cover 95% of your driving. Especially in a heavy truck you need the torque to get you rolling, its way better to have one size too smallthan one size to large.
