i have a friend who has quite abit of BBC stuff he wants to sell, he just recently got into dirt track modified & he's getting rid of all his BBC stuff and gathering up SBC stuff...i have been gathering SBC stuff for years, i have @ 14 complete SBC's mostly 350's, a couple of 400's & a sj327....& i plan to keep all of it!

but i recently got into the BBC scene..i bought a stock 454 for $455 off ebay and made a 7 hr drive to get it, did a rebuild w/mild cam and aluminum intake & put it in my k10, now i got the BBC flu & i want to know if what he has is worth what he wants for it...

he has 2 std. bore blocks, 1 .060 block, NO cranks, 3 or 4 sets of heads/not sure of casting #'s, he also has 2-3 sets of stock rods and pistons/1 set is for a 427 and i have a 366TD, which i've been told is probably a forged crank that's the same as a 427 crank(so i could put together a 427 w/it & 1 of the blocks), a couple of oil pans & couple of sets of valve covers, 2 factory 4b intakes, 1 aftermarket aluminum intake & the accessories for the front of 2 BBC's, brand new Manley aluminum connecting rods, .060 12.5:1 SRP pistons/118cc heads and a real radical roller cam...he says he has @ $1400 in just the new rods & pistons & he wants $1200 for all the BBC stuff i listed...is it worth it? considering \/this\/

i doubt i'll use the aluminum rods since they aren't for an engine that runs for extended periods of time, i thought about trying to sell the rods and cam & buy me some forged steel rods, little less radical cam and crank and build the 12.5:1 engine for my k5 that is a dedicated toy/no street time just a mud truck that has a mild 350 in it now.

but then again me being a bbc newb, i don't know if i could use those Manley rods, SRP pistons & the roller cam and build me an engine to run thru the mud bog and be ok, because 4x4high said that type of engine needs a regular tear down to check stuff out, like rod stretch, but i don't know if it needs checked every week or can it go all season/8-12 weekends, 3-4 passes each weekend and be tore down between seasons? if it will go all season w/ a rebuild between seasons, i probably could fund that but if it needs a tear down every couple of weeks, i doubt i could afford that. so i ask those of you who do know??????

Ive had a few big blocks,

just threw 2 away for scrap.. 2 bolt mains and peanut heads.

People would not give even 50.00 for them:rolleyes:

These were complete motors, I sold the brackets and pulleys before I scrapped em, but could not sell the motors even complete from intake to pan and acc.

Oh.. to answer, things are worth what people are willing to pay. I am always giving friends nice deals, usually I get a great deal from them at some point too.

Nobody wanted a block for 50 bucks? Even it has a bunch of other stuff (crank, rods, heads, ETC)?
I put my two bolt main though a lot.

Around here BBC stuff is hard to come by. The cars/trucks that came with them have either been scrapped now, or they are in the hands of someone who doesn't want to part with it. I payed $400 for my 2bolt block w/forged crank. The blocks can take a .60 overbore without much of a problem. 2bolt mains are usualy plenty for what most people build. If it were me and I were looking at picking some more BBC stuff up, I'd have no problem paying $1000 for everything. $1200 wouldn't be bad either, you can always sell off the stuff you didn't want.

You have to rember price varries by region and sometes even the season. What is on your local craigslist right now? What is it selling for?

Seriously:(

I offered to give them, yes give them to one friend and he took his sweet time and I finally said the hell with it and tossed it with a load of scrap. The only hope is some people do buy the blocks from this yard as they pay a higher price for them and they are separated out.

Very true....complete 454's needing rebuilds are 3-500 in MI.
I think .060 is all you want out of late model 454's. If its .060 already and the cylinders are out of round, or have a taper (454's are very tight on these tolerances) I would pass on that block.
Unless the heads are .049, or 781 castings, I would say those aren't worth a whole lot either. Check the cranks....a good forged crank std or .010 would be worth 3-400 up here.

I would say do some research in your area, to see what comparable parts are SELLING for, not asking price.
