what\'s better: 3/4 ton 14bff/open/3.73 gears or 14 bff/gov-loc/4.10 gears?

I'm trying to decide on which axle to get. They're both priced at about $175. I'm keeping the 10bolt up front for now, and am thinking of going to 4.10 gears anyways. If I go w/the open, I will have to change out the gears and add a locker. If I go with gov-loc'd rear, I can keep the gearing, but would adding a locker later on be more expensive? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Will you ultimately want more gear than 4.10's? If so, then the ratio may not be that big of a factor.

Locker choices for the Gov Lock carrier are slim, I'd get the open carrier axle now for the ease of getting a Detroit later.

I'm looking at gears to turn 35-36" tires now, and possibly 38" in a couple of years (if becomes a trail rig only). I was thinking of going with either 4.10 or 4.56 gearing. Currently, it's my DD (about 10 miles per day), and may do some traveling from SoCal to Tahoe, so I want to keep it driveable on the highway.

go wtih the open carrir so you can slap in an detriot. you have an 700r4 trnny right? I think your going to need more than 4.10. your going to need more like 4.88 or maybe 5.13. and don't forget your going to need to convert the front to 8-lug.

I will be converting the front to 8 lug, and later on down the line swapping in a d60. I do have the 700r4 tranny; I thought 4.56 was more than enough gearing for 35-36". Is it not enough for 38"? I do want to keep it driveable, as in SoCal everything seems to be at least 1/2 hour of driving distance away

4.56's are great with 35's to 37's with a 700R. 4.88's are good with 38's to 40's with a 700R. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Seems like the 14b open is the preferred axle, since I will more than likely go with 4.56 rather than 4.10s

Thanks for all your help /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

either that...or get the 4.10's Gov lock....run it till ya wanna get 38's or bigger, then when yer looking for gears find a new carrier that way u can get a detroit...until then unless yer gonna do ALOT of rock's then a govlock 14bolt is a good unit /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
