so i need to put a 10 spline 465/205 set up into a 91 suburban that has a 465/208(241?) i don't want to get new driveshafts or clutch for it. so, what's involved in swapping the transfercase as well as the input shaft (that's the one that goes into the clutch... right?) if it's a big PITA to swap the input shaft, i'll do the new clutch - but i definitely will be needing to run the same transfercase. seem like all i gotta do for that, tho, is swap the adapter and the case.

i'm hoping to make this a one day event - is that doable? swapping trans out is no big deal.

thanks!

you should not have to swap the clutch, if you already have a 465 with 205 swap them out. you will have to do something with the drive shaft, the 208 is slip yoke, 205 is fixed........

Not all 205s are fixed fyi. All the clutches are course 10 spline though so no worries there. Its the output shaft that changed from course to find spline. In order to use your 241 you would need to change the output shaft on the trans depending on year.

Your definatly not getting away without doing driveshafts though if your gonna change to 205.

are you trying to just swap the sm465's or do you want a np205 in the burb as well?

no, i must have worded this wrong. i have an older 465/205 (fixed yoke 205) that i'm putting into the 91 burb. I want to keep the 241 in the burb so i don't have to change driveshafts. this is not my burb - it belonged to a church i was part of when i lived in a different part of the state.

thanks for the info about the input shaft - didn't know they were all the same. so, how involved is swapping out the tail shaft, adapter and tcase? with the exception of the tailshaft (which i know nothing about), it seems very easy... unbolt what i want to keep and swap it over.

will i need special tools for the tailshaft?

When you say older 465, are you talking a 10 spline output unit? If so, it ain't gonna happen. 241's behind 465's, 400's. and 4L80E's have 32 spline inputs. In order to use the other trans you would have to swap the output shaft, which requires bearing pullers, good snap ring pliers, a press, and plenty of cussing...

When you say old 205 how old? Split the trans and adapter and see how many splines it is. Your gonna have to split them anyway when you go to put the tranny in.

max, the existing one has the syncros going out.

stomis - why will i have to split them when i install it? i've never had to do that before. this is an old 10spline unit. i believe this unit came from a 77 blazer? not sure, but most recently it was in my rig. it belonged to tRustyk5 before i got it, and i can't remember what he said he got it from.

I meant if you were going to attempt to use the 241 you would have to split em anyway. Yeah if you know its course output then forget it, just use the 205 and do shafts.

to save me some searching, would any pick up driveshafts be the proper length, or will i just have to find a suburban driveshaft that originally had the 465/205? i'm trying to save the church some money - so i don't want to have custom shafts made. they only drive it about 2 times a week to haul a big ass trailer with all their gear to the school where they hold the services... unfortunately, it's not wheelin church. :haha:

Tear the trannies down and swap the rear parts , use the 241 and its adapter , and be done with it .

It may seem hard , but with a little attention to detail and some exploded views , you'll be ok .

Everyone wants you to run a 205 , but the church ain't running 42's and a doubler :)

no, but what it comes down to for me is simplicity. lengthening the driveshaft or installing another used shaft is easiest. ;) it'll never see 4wd anyway. i just want it to be a simply day task.

Or just replace the syncros in the trans that's in there now. Swapping to a 205 is going to cost you more time and money with no real gain.

I have a slip yoke 205 i am swaping to a fixed i can sell ya if it helps out with the drive shaft length not the tcase just the yoke and output.pm if interested.

i just assumed replacing syncro's was going to be difficult. tell me more?
