Whats the deal with destroked engines?

I don't know a whole lot about LS1 motors. How hard is it to start squeezing more power out of one and still keep the computer.

the upper limit of the factory computer and the fueling issues that occur with huge amounts of fuel is about 1000hp...so you should be fine.

An amazing ls1 programming system that allows you to tune every portion of the computer from tranny shift points to shifting firmness to everything with the engine....is called "ls1edit".


Also with the mild cam and head swap on that stock 5.3 motor, picked up 120+hp sticking it in the 460hp range. The heads were also used factory aluminum heads so no high dollar parts either. The L92 heads they tested out are a bit expensive but they also pulled 500+hp with a small cam.

a buddy here used to run a 377 in his 1st toyota truggy. it was an ON or OFF engine, but he is a WOT or nothing driver so it worked out.

IIRC the 377 was made specifically to fit into 1 particular race car class way back when.

you don't want one. 302 377 or other wise if its not in a race car.
 
Check out LS1tech.com for all your LS1 questions. I would suggest HPTune for the LS1 computer tuning software.
 
if its a lg. journal 327 crank, drop it in a 400 block....iirc....its a 347cid, but will rev and have the umph of the big bore block...i've been lookin for a lg jrnal 327 crank to build the aforementioned motor, but every 327 i find is a small journal.
 
Uhh why go backwards on stroke length for a dual purpose build. Stroke builds torque so why go to 3.250 instead of 3.480 stroke
 
shorter stroke=more rpms mixed w/ bigger 400 bore, should still have good power=dual purpose....maybe not what he needs, but i think a 327 crank in a 400 block would be nice...its not just stroke that makes torque...a longer rod will also add it, just like a cheater bar on a wrench...and the 327 crank will need longer rods in a 400 block, depending on pistons, if you were to get custom pistons w/wrist pin close to top of the piston, it would take a pretty long rod and up the torque while still reving like a die grinder.
 
Better power than a 327, less power than a 400...where's the advantage? (that would be called a 350 BTW, and someone already thought of that combo)
 
I have built 3 destoked 400's and they are awesome better than my 406 in every way the " No tourqe " thing is just because most guys build them to rap
I built mine with Vortec heads and a Mild cam with the longest rod I could fit with out compromising pin location and my motors idle good have a nice flat tourqe curve

the last one I built dyno'd at 381 hp and 388 lbs ft at 5000rpm on 89 octane pump gas

its alot better than a 383 stroker and right there with comparable 406's
 
Yellowk20, I'm guessing you used a 3.48 stroke crank and did a 377?

I've seen a 317 run on a dyno. Its a dart block and about a 4.155 bore and a 3.10 stroke crank. It did 747hp at 9800rpm. The owner has way over $20k in the engine. It runs in Comp elim class in NHRA meets. His class is a no power adders class so thats not bad for a NA'd motor. They can work great in a lite weight vehicle under the right conditions.

IMO a 3.250 stroke engine is not a good combo for a vehicle weighing over 3500lbs. As good as a 327 was lots of them died when pushed hard. I've been told by a couple of guys who built 377's for pickups that they liked them because of the better fuel mileage with decent power.

Look at Ford and their options, a 302 vs the 351. For the most part anyone who used that in a 4x4 preferred the 351 because of the power. The bad side of this is that power costs fuel.
 
yes I used a Forged Lunati hammer crank in 3.48 stroke My mileage has been awesome much better than the 383 that was in there and way more power.


your rod ratio has more to to with your Torque than most people realize . we could go on for days on engine theory .......
I guess my point is you need to match your components and have a realistic goal of power . I have a 406 in my brown truck with 6" rods and dart heads . it "should" stomp a mud hole in my "destroker" but it doesn't it doesn't get the Mileage or have the torque of my 377's and its a well built 406 with all the toys.


327 's are ok they just need to be built for you app you dont put a comp eliminator engine in a Dumptruck and expect it to last LOL

I built one of these years ago in a chevy luv truck street sleeper...

Didn't even use a tach,,,just wound it up till it quit pulling and clicked the shifter up a notch...:D:D:D

Man, I miss that truck....low 10 second quarters...:D:D:D
